Building a Buffer
02/03/15
So, blogging on the bus has led to me publishing an extra blogpost twice so far. Which is good, because I missed two days this year. Meaning I am once again at an average of a blog post per day for this year, which is the main goal for the year (I have many other goals for the year, but this one is the one I've given the most focus).
I'm thinking now that any extra blog post I write will go into a buffer, and on days when I want to focus on something else, I'll just publish from the buffer. I'd like to get it to a minimum of seven posts, that way I can decide to lend serious focus to a week-long project (that I would hopefully write a blog post about in parallel).
I think a buffer would really help me transition from a quantity to quality philosophy for this blog. I think quantity is really good for now, mind you, because my writing is rusty, undisciplined, and just needs constant repetition of the basics before serious work can be approached. Whether or not I am really working on the basics is probably something I should write in another post (and maybe also I should peruse some books on solid writing).
But with a buffer, I can maintain my daily posting and also start working on posts that take more than a day to write. And I have plenty of post-ideas saved that would take more than a day to write. Some would take research, and some would take me writing them out, realizing I don't believe what I'm writing, rewriting, and repeat until I know what I believe.
Some of these posts are already partially written, but the problem with them is that it doesn't feel like I'm working fast enough writing them, because of my conflicting goal of writing a post a day, regardless of the quality or lenght of those posts. With a buffer, I feel the pleasure of posting whilst still writing longer posts.
And if, somehow, I build a buffer that lasts the rest of the year at some point, maybe I'll devote full focus to some of my other goals for the year (that I haven't really been adhering to at all yet). Though, I think I'm just going to have to figure out how to work on those goals too, Stephan. That, or accept they might have to wait until they can be a priority, which may not be this year at all.
