Changing Hosts?

08/21/15

So, I was pointed at bluehost by Mr. Money Mustache, and it occurred to me, am I spending to much on hosting?

Short answer: yes.

When I was first looking for hosting, I tried out... some hosting site that didn't give me ssh access. I eventually asked a friend, and he pointed me to Linode, which I currently use. I have liked Linode just fine for about a year and a half now. When I joined Linode, their cheapest offer was $20 a month. Something I found quite cheap at the time, but now I don't agree that I can afford it, as I am not yet financially independent.

It was at this point that I found out that Linode has a cheaper plan at $10 per month. Which I have already switched to. However, I may explore even cheaper options. bluehost and Dream Host appear to have $5 per month plans (but it's like a special deal that may expire or something, I don't know).

$5 per month isn't huge savings, but putting in an hour of work towards it or so would be savings I earned back in under a year, if it doesn't really hurt me at all to go to a worse service at a cheaper price. And most of these places have a money-back guarantee. So, I can try out a few hosting options and just pick what I like. I seriously doubt traffic is something I need to worry about right now.

Let's do some experimentation.

P.S. Changing to a different payment setup is why my site was down for a bit. I forgot to restart it properly after I restarted the server.
