Christian Apologetics

06/01/15

For the first 15 years of my life or so, I was a Christian. My reasons for leaving the faith were more-or-less the same as my reasons for entering. As I had a conversion moment, so too did I have a deconversion moment. Somewhere in my childhood I felt the reality of God, and somewhere in my 16th year I felt that lack of reality.

Over the course of another 10 years or so, I came to a realization, both my reasons for becoming a Christian and my reasons for becoming an atheist were poor. They were based on personal senses leading to personal interpretations of reality, and the exact same feelings led to polar-opposite conclusions at different points in my life.

It is for this reason, I think, that I dug so deeply into apologetics as I became an atheist. Perhaps some part of me knew that I was leaving for poor reasons. Though, if that's true, it didn't seem to bother me that I was Christian for poor reasons as well.

Anyways, as I dug into the philosophical arguments for Christianity, I found them all flawed. Eventually, not too long ago, I stopped considering it something worth arguing over. I was finally comfortable in my atheism. Around the same time, I stopped being an anti-theist, and I stopped considering religion to be the cause of various evils.

Every once in a while, though, I find myself retuning to debates and arguments over the existence of God. I'm not sure why, though it feels very similar to watching an old television series that I've seen before many times. I suppose it's nostalgic.

It occurred to me on my most-recent explorations that documenting my little relapse here may be quite enlightening, and also serve as a better place to document my thoughts than reddit.

So, coming soon, me rambling about why I don't various arguments for God convincing.
