Convincing People to Leave
01/15/15
So, today I went to a Smash Bros. tournament. It's at a place that holds them weekly, and a good friend of mine was a major contributor to organizing such events.
This is the fourth time or so I've gone to this weekly tournament, but I haven't been there for a while. There were a lot of people there this week. The scene has been growing nicely.
I was really enjoying my time there, even though I was being beaten down hard. And then someone started being obnoxiously loud. It was slightly sporadic at first, but then it was a constant stream. It hurt my ears.
At some point I told him to shut up. He was being insulting anyways, so I'm not sure if he acknowledged me or not, but there was definitely not any attempt to quiet down. Now, I didn't really go any further, and maybe he would have quieted down if I properly asked him, but I was already tired and annoyed, so I quit my game, and prematurely left the tournament, and just went home.
I think it's important to think of the purpose something has, and what actions help contribute to that purpose and what may be a detriment. Now, I understand cheering and yelling in the heat of the moment, but at some point you may just be convincing people that the scene isn't for them. And these could be people who really enjoy the actions being done, but something unrelated is driving them away.
I am seriously considering quitting the whole Melee thing. That's how bad that short experience within a pretty cool, fun time was for me.
