CSS Digging Deeper

04/04/15

One of the things that excites me about impress.js is that it's styled with CSS. I mean, look around, my CSS is greatly lacking. I felt the need to address it for a while, but felt generally ignorant about how to go about even starting. Googling about learning to style wasn't particularly helpful. Now, hoever, I have slowly amassed some resources that I feel will help me on my journey.

First, reading through the impress.js source gave some insight into certain practices and linked to some good stuff like resetting and HTML5 slides.

Next, I subscribed to a weekly CSS newsletter, which should provide plenty of good content. That newsletter had some recommended people to follow on Twitter, so I went ahead and did that. This is actually a pretty valuable step, following a bunch of javascript-related accounts eventually linked me to some articles and tutorials that led to some node code that I actually use. I feel the same will happen with CSS.

So, now it's a matter of thinking about what I want to do that requires CSS, what subset of that is something I can do now, with my current knowledge, and keeping an eye out for good resources that unlock more capability a bit at a time.

What I want to do is make my website look better. Or, at least to make it look different again and again until I find out how I want to make it look. Something I can do now is make a stylesheet from scratch for this site. Maybe start by going to some sites I like to go to, seeing how they place things, and trying to copy what they do.

It's a good thing I have this site under version control now. It'll be interesting to look back on it in a year. I have a feeling lots is going to be different.
