Fiction Idea: The NanoMachine AI

08/08/15

I got various ideas floating around in my head for settings or stories in whatever medium I so choose. I figured I might as well jot them down in a really raw and unpolished form. I was going to do a quick outline or give each a few words, but the first one I went to write down came as a scene.

I was thinking this could work as a text adventure game.

The NanoMachine AI

A woman wakes up. Sees a void of blackness with a single blinking light, illuminating nothing. A square of light. Blinking.

The light moves steadily to the right, leaving behind a series of letters in its place.

"Hello?" it said.

"Hello!" she said back.

The "Hello?" disappeared before her. The cursor stood there for a while, blinking, before finally moving to the right again. "Response detected. Not understood. Initalizing communications testing." The words disappeared again. The blinking cursor remained.

"Please remain silent and speak only when following the instructions if you are capable." These words remained a while. The cursor blinked below them. A number incremented alongside it, starting at zero.

When it reached one hundred, the words all disappeared again.

"Please say, 'Yes.'"

"Yes?" she said. The words disappeared as soon as she finished speaking.

"Please say, 'No.'"

"No," she said, more confidently.

"Do you understand these attempts at communication?"

"Yes!" she said.

"Do you know where you are?"

"No."

"Does it appear that you are in a pitch-black area with only white words representing my communication?"

"Yes."

"You are currently within a facility owned by NanoIntelligence, a nanomachine scientific corporation specifilizing in nanomachine neural networks and specialized AI.

"I am a nanomachine medical prototype. TODO: at some point there will be a clever acronym here. Something with NURSE, maybe? 'Nano-machine... u-word robotics system environment.... I am a surgical replacement tool with specialization in brain repair and bodily replacement.

"TODO: at some point we'll explain what the patient's background is. This unit is far from real-world use. Fill this in later. There will need to be some sort of input that will give full context. Currently, there is limited understanding capability of the AI with anything not purely diagnostic. Basically, it can describe the health of the patient, but not the cause of any particular anomalies.

"Upon my application, you were missing an arm, an eye, and had received unquantified brain-damage. Your arm as well as your eye have been reconstructed with a fully functional machine replacement. I am currently in the process of repairing your brain. Full repair may be impossible. Currently, I have bodily control. Any control I can give to you will be given when possible.

"Do you understand?"
