Game Jam Haunted: Blank Game

07/12/15

Okay, for the hour from 0930-1030, I want to make a blank game in the Isogenic Game Engine (IGE) Prototype. It might only take a half-hour, but I may have trouble setting up the IGE server.

So, we'll see.

Installing the Server

Rethinking Engine Usage

This library hasn't been updated in about a year and a half.... Looking at this list, and sorting by last release. I find various libraries that look like they're updated more frequently and have more-active communities.

I may be getting too distracted by this. Screw it, let's go with the highest-rated, recently updated library: pixi.js (which actually has commits as recent as two weeks ago).

No, no, no. Let's go with the original planned library. This is about learning to use a tool, it isn't about learning a tool I know I want to learn. I don't know what I want to learn, so who cares what library I pick as long as it's neat and works?

I'll switch if I can't figure it out.

Installing the Server

Well, I just forked their github repo and set it up so I could run their blank game example. It looks like an endless loading screen, which confused me at first, because I wasn't sure if the demo was working.

I don't need to actually run the server unless I want to do multiplayer components or something (not interested in that right now).

The next thing to do, I think, will be looking at the given examples and trying to find examples that will help me make an MVP of an on-rails platformer.

Keyboard control and its derivatives may be of interest.
