Home System Needs Development
11/04/15
So, things have been in flux a lot. And it's been the good kind of flux. Things are totally mutating in all kinds of good and DRY directions.
But I still have a long, long way to go.
My work-system is in a similar stat of flux. But it feels like it's so many steps ahead of this system. Which feels ironic considering that system was inspired from me doing this here blog.
Though, it does make sense, considering how I do well above four posts on average per work day. I get more practice in with that system. Ideas come and go in higher frequency and stronger form.
What I need to do is work towards some explict design of my system, as I've recently discovered at work. How should things be set up and why.
At home this is also a harder problem, as I need to track more than just work on a computer. The blog is but a single aspect of my day, and isn't meant to track everything. I momentarily attempted a diary to solve this problem, but it never quite got off the ground.
I think the diary was too close in form to my work system. And that's the work system of old, too, which still greatly needed ironing out. I think even the work-system now would be misplaced, though it would be better than the nothing-system I have in place now.
I need to be aware of the problems I'm trying to solve, and aware of the options I have to solve them. It's quite likely I should make use of several tools across various technologies to address all those problems.
So... what are those problems?
I should probably define the problems I want to address, right, Stephan?
I want to track, improve, and eradicate things in my life.
Tracking
The things I want to track include:
- Spending
- Timing
- Diet
- Goals
- Progress
- Research
- Projects
- Distractions
- Compulsions/Addictions
Improve and Eradicate
I feel that tracking will naturally lead to these things. I want to improve upon my game development abilities, and that should show in goals, progress, research, and projects.
I want to stop watching videos, and that'll appear in progress, distractions, and compulsions/addictions.
So, really, I want to build the skills necessary to track things without it actually degrading my life. I think in reality, if I were to track these things with some effort, the time-cost would be made up for by the value extracted from the data gathering. And that'd be before I got good at the system and automated what could be automated.
So, then, what I need do is design the system and iterate on it until I use it as I desire.
