Javascript: Crafty Timer
01/24/15
I have the beginnings of my timer remade using the Crafty javascript game framework. I'm on my second commit, and I have setting the timer, starting the timer, pausing the timer, and such working.
It was at this point that I was momentarily stuck. It may have been related to me being sick and just hacking away at code, but I wasn't really sure of an elegant means of adding more functionality. It already seemed too tightly knit. Which, in all honesty, is probably a quality that my currently used timer has. I am only so able to manipulate it as I am because it is 1) not that big yet, and 2) I interacted with its code on an almost daily basis until changing my focus back to using Crafty.
Which really just reminds me, I should start over more often. And I mean, start over without even referring to my previous attempts. Using Crafty makes me think I should shoehorn some library in and try to integrate it. Really get a feel for what's useful where and why.
But also, starting over is just really valuable. I find myself embracing ideas I've recently read, and various bad coding habits and craft patterns reveal themselves to me in the process of recreating. They reveal themselves in that I notice that they cause problems and give me trouble during the recreation.
It is incredibly useful.
I may just abandon development on the timer I currently use, and just cycle through recreated timers and general productivity tools. I'll switch to using the new one as it outperforms the previous one.
I'll do this until I become good enough to build and use proper modular libraries that can withstand more and more developement being thrown onto it.
And then I'll start working on proper development focus.
