Tornado: Website Postmortem

12/04/14

So... I failed to make a website with python. I mean, I didn't hear about making one in javascript and decide to do that.

Well, I did do that, but I didn't stop the Tornado website transition because of that. I quit working on it long before any of that happened. Now that I have officially abandoned it, I should probably do one of those post-mortem-thingies.

And here we are, Stephan.

Mistakes were Made

This is pretty obvious. I mean, I don't have a functioning Tornado website. The closest I got was a carbon-copy of my home page up and running.

I think my main problem is trying to change my site right now too much from what it is now. If I'm going to transition this site over to some other kind of backend other than nginx (and I still plan to and will), then I need to have my site as it currently exists running off that new backend.

Meaning, take the static html files, feed them through whatever backend my site is using, and have that serve content to users. That's my next step. That's a proper first mutation to many other changes I really want to get around to.

Other than that, I got too caught up in research and didn't do enough doing. Which, hopefully, I'll learn to address better and better with my AgileGame

Good Memories

I got to play around with python a bit, and that's always fun. I'm pretty sure I learned some new aspect of python, but at this point I don't remember what it was.

It was also a reminder of the existence of javascript. Something I did not think much about since I took a web development class. With me, it takes quite a few reminders or repeats before I start digging into anything. Something doesn't get my serious attention until it comes from about three different sources or something (I guess that would be my version of the rule of three).

I was really excited about getting into proper web development stuff, at the time. I find that excitement coming again here with node.js, and I think thanks to my failure with Tornado, I have a better idea of what to do this time, as I try again.

Going Forward

Javascript is getting my full attention... outside of work, and learning Japanese.... "Full attention" means javascript is getting about an hour of attention every day. With more on weekends (though, I need to explicitly plan that out—blog post reminder made).

I'm hoping that very soon I will have my site running on node.js, and that instead of figuring that out, I'll be figuring out the fun ways I can mutate my site further.
