I have received word from Mixpanel that I will receive word from them by Tuesday.

Exciting.

I have continued to be bad about wasting time before doing stuff. Today I feel I have the willpower to be good, so that's what I'll do!

Going to see the new Spiderman movie today, Stephan!

Though, that's not why I remembered to write a post today.

No.

I have a friend. Let's call him Jesse, because that's his name. Jesse brought up an interesting analogy to me, in that he's decided to set aside time to address "emotional debt". This totally seems like the sort of thing my mentor would bring up to me, and if he did, I'm sorry that I've forgotten the analogy.

Emotional debt, if you are familiar with technical debt, immediately makes sense as a concept, and upon reading the term I immediately appreciated its existence.

Yes, I should address emotional situations that I have not properly processed or dealt with during the ebb and flow of my day-to-day meanderings. Yes, it makes sense to set aside time for that.

Very useful to explicitly think about.

Really, really sore. Yesterday I did the second day of the 5 minutes of pullups.

Arms sore and appropriate back muscles sore.

Been bad about visiting sites before doing things I should do, and amazingly it's leading me to being less happy than the days I'm good about it.

So, let's be good today.

Wed Jul 5 21:01:09 UTC 2017

Looked up to see if doing pullups today again would be fine even if sore. I think I may be sore enough that it's better to rest.

Now it's time to work on project some more.

I retreat from problems with ambiguous solutions. If I don't know what I want the end result to be, instead of searching for what I want, I kind of just avoid it.

Definitely a personal flaw to overcome.

Not visiting sites has helped me see this pretty clearly. Right now, I need to refactor the site I'm working on, both in the code and how it's presented to the client in the browser. And how that should look needs to be assessed, and whenever I go to start, I instead find myself trying to go to one of my "premium sites".

Mon Jul 3 19:54:00 UTC 2017

Let's just start playing with the site.

Mon Jul 3 19:54:20 UTC 2017

Actually, internet has been spotty, let's setup a local site so I can keep working if internet goes down.

Mon Jul 3 20:10:26 UTC 2017

Decided to change-up my pull-up strategy. Used to have my clock beep every hour and go do as many pull-ups as I could. It both wasn't enough pull-ups at a time and I wasn't consistent enough, so I just stayed around 1-3 pull-ups. Now, I do as many as I can in five minutes. Hopefully, I do that once a day. Once I can no longer do any pullups, I do whatever kind of assisted pull-ups I can manage with the equipment I have. The bar I'm currently using is close enough to the ground that I can keep my feet on the ground and make myself "lighter". Also, I try to do good negative pull-ups on my way down.

I just executed my first five-minute exercise. My arms and back are properly fatigued.

Reminding myself that I want to do things when hitting a "Premium Site" in my Browsing Costs extension has been working very well. I haven't been visiting any of the usual sites until later in the day after having done some amount of the things I want.

It's not properly completionist. For example, I haven't drawn everyday, though I definitely want to build that habit. It may well be worthwhile to make it a part of my site-blocker to have a checklist of things to do before I can visit sites.

This week, however, I'm focusing on a project I'm working on with a friend. Which I have never gone into detail about, but really it's just a simple Django site that takes exported Mint csv's as input and let's you visualize data how you want.

Been a while!

I've been distracted and also currently have a cold, I think.

Interviews with both Mixpanel and AQR went very well! I struggled with a question from each, and otherwise tackled the other questions reasonably. I'll want to do a post-mortem for sure, but we'll see how long it takes for e to get to that. I have good notes from the AQR interview, but not such good notes from Mixpanel.

So, I should probably review Mixpanel sooner rather than later to minimize forgotten things.

However, first I shall discuss excising some things from my life. Namely, I'm once again going to attempt to remove wasteful browsing from my life. And also watch only select TV.

I'm not going to put any limits on video games, because I seem to play games that tire me out and in all honesty it seems the more I can game, the more I can focus on productive things, so gaming is practice as far as I'm concerned.

Anyways, everytime I go about limiting my browsing I try a different strategy. Last time, it was my Browsing Costs chrome extension that I made myself. And I think an extension is the way to go, actually, but I think the mistake I made with Browsing Costs, and that most site-blockers make, is that I'm avoiding going to sites because I want to do things.

So, rather, before I go to any sites I deem a "waste of time", I'd like to devote a minimum amount of time to the various things I want to improve at. So, programming, drawing, writing, whatever.

So, next extension will just verify I've done just that before letting me into any sites.

But that's an honor system no matter what so I can use my current "Browsing Costs" extension and just remind myself to do those things first.

Fri Jun 30 20:54:32 EDT 2017

Watching Hunger Games with fam. Going to do some programming at the same time, I think, as I've already seen the movie.

Today I rode my bike 35 miles or so from my Aunt's (aka my current home) to my cousin's. I did the ride with my uncle-in-law (non-blood, super cool uncle's brother) who had recently finished a ride across the country (took a month), and my cousin who had the double handicap of not biking as much as me (and not nearly as much as the uncle-in-law) and riding on a moutain bike that's slight too small for him.

It was fun. I will be sore tomorrow.

Also, tomorrow is my birthday. I'll be 27.

Sweet.

Also, also, a while back an aquaintance (he's a YouTuber called TheDavoo) linked to another YouTuber called Bill Whitle to back up what I still consider to be poorly informed political opinions.

Today I found a video dismantling Bill Whittle's video denial of climate change.

I fully expect most if not all of Bill Whittle's videos to be as wrong as his climate change video. I expect this because he is a man who works hard at justifying opinions he already has, not on having correct opinions. He also never cites sources in any way whatsoever from what I have seen.

I like TheDavoo a lot, but his political opinions are complete rubbish.

Mistrail in the Cosby case.

Been seeing a lot of people admonishing others for having an attitude of "guilty until proven innocent".

Random people on the sidelines aren't the law. They don't have to have an attitude of "innocent until proven guilty".

And in this case, assuming Cosby's innocence is assuming many others of being liars to a criminal level. If we're pretending that social opinion is a crime, both the accuser and the accused are on trial. There is no real neutral ground. So I'm going to form an informed opinion, and when I don't have enough information, I'm going to side with those with less resources and/or a lack of proper representation or power. Chances are they're not criminals, they're oppressed.

Just making sure I at least have a post for today.

Might not do anything more than that.

Fri Jun 16 21:45:34 UTC 2017

Brushed up on hash maps a bit today. Should do some exercises with 'em, though.

Maybe should do some coding in C++ and even Java, too, just to get the rust off.

Got my first interview in a week, after all.
