Further thinking on one hand-written note: analysis of variance or ANOVA. This is a methodology for testing multiple variables at once and then finding a means of measuring the effect of any one variable. Mastery of this concept is probably necessary if I wish to do A/B/C/D/etc testing. And being able to visualize such data in tools such as Mixpanel or Amplitude is a necessary part of that.

Last week I discussed wanting to devote time specifically for cleaning house (aka moving actions from emails to trello). I think a reordering of the checklist is in order to do the things I want. Also, I'm moving free-form stuff to the end because they can take up a lot of time (and maybe get their own pomodoro today).

Sun Jul 01 17:23:58 UTC 2018

All right, time to empty my head.

There's a lot in there right now, but I think the main thing to talk about is 7 Habits and what I plan to do with what I've gained from the book.

There are a few things this book mentioned that reminded me of things I used to do, that I have stopped doing, but should reignite. First: not talking about people behind their back. I used to call that out when a part of the conversation and say, "Unless this is practice for what we're going to say to them, we shouldn't be talking about them like this." I want to start doing this again.

Another thing that the book explicitly brought up that I've made progress on and then regressed on is "Seeking First to Understand". Right now, I'm actually pretty good at saying, "I don't understand." But in some cases, I just state that and stop, I make no real effort to understand. There are, for instance, many completely alien things to me, like my wife's disability, that I had decided that admitting it was alien was good enough.

It's because I'd "listen to reply" and not "listen to understand". I realized the former was bad, but I never properly considered just trying to understand. So I've talked with my wife and I'll work on proper reflection of what she tells me she's going through in an effort to improve my understanding.

And this line of thinking led me to politics. There are two lines of thought here. One, I should seek relationship and true understanding of the oppressed whom I wish to be an ally. And two, I should seek understanding of those whom political choices I consider evil. Both are important to travel down and execute, but I think one should have priority and happen first before two.

Two is, as it turns out, easier to start attempting than one. I have family and acquaintances in two. Further understanding them without further understanding the oppressed is problematic, however, because they're already getting lots of media attention and the like bending-over backward to show their humanity and justifying (not necessarily understanding) their actions.

One requires me to get to know some such people. A situation I don't readily find myself in. The best I can do right now is watch and read content from such people. Which I do a little bit of, but.... I have a long way to go. My circle of peers should include such people as well. I need to be intolerant of the lack of diversity in my peers.

Perhaps an answer there is to start going to Not This Time or Black Lives Matter meetings.

Anyways, this marks the end of my weekly review.

I need to start keeping receipts again so I can YNAB them properly. Though, I should be able to recognize charges to card/bank as they come in.

Last month was a great day until it wasn't. I gave specifics the next day. I said all I need to say on it, I think.

Mon Jul 02 04:30:27 UTC 2018

Last week, I started having a list of things to write about to review the day. I had a lot to say this day. I recently succeeded at the bouldering problem that skinned my hands. I'm almost fully healed from that as well. I still think it was worth it.

Mon Jul 02 04:32:53 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I got back from Tahoe.

Mon Jul 02 04:33:32 UTC 2018

Excited to get back to climbing tomorrow. I wonder what's different.

I didn't make time for my timer today. Or rather, I didn't adhere to the time I set aside for timer today. This is okay. Weekly review was the right choice, and otherwise I had a good, lazy Sunday.

I just started listening to Capital in the 21st Century. I think I'm going to like it a lot.

I watched some Overwatch YouTube with the wife today.

Mon Jul 02 04:36:12 UTC 2018

I have started YNAB today, Stephan. I first got the free-trial way back when I lived in Tucson. I literally never used it. They gave it to me again six months later. Didn't use it. They've given it to me again. Using it.

I think I have structure in place to use it, and it fits right in with how I've been improving my life in other areas of life. Aka, capture data without judgement, then make plans to influence future data.

I mean, it wants me to start with budgets right away, but I'll really just use it to accurately reflect spending at first, and then use my knowledge of the tool to use it as intended after however long I feel is right.

Anyways, I'm way past time on my pomodoro, time to wind down.
