Today I'm going to the Seattle Indies Meetup.
I don't have a working laptop, so I'm bringing a notebook and just going to jot down ideas, thoughts, pictures, whatever.
Today I'm going to the Seattle Indies Meetup.
I don't have a working laptop, so I'm bringing a notebook and just going to jot down ideas, thoughts, pictures, whatever.
I now live in Seattle and have Internet.
Woo.
My Chromebook died before the move. Considering how cheap it was, how long I had it, and how much I used it, I think it was a worthy purchase.
Probably not one I'll be repeating, though, Stephan.
Starting tomorrow I'll be trying out timeblocking my days again.
I start work on Monday, lots of stuff to do before then.
Time to go walk about the city.
So much stuff going on, should really be keeping this diary proper.
Oh, well.
Went to Seattle, was awesome. Saw lots of places. Signed lease for place today. Paying more than I would like, but it's a six-month lease, and I could've done way worse, and it's hopefully something I can easily fix in six months and be super stoked about saving even more money.
Came back, packed a bit, then left for Wisconsin to spend a weekend with my bro and his family and our mutual friend, Kevin. Got back Tuesday night. Didn't pack at all.
It's technically Thursday morning (0200 EDT right now). Probably have half of our stuff properly packed. Going to go to bed soon. Will wake up and go grab the rental vehicle that I will be driving to Seattle.
We will be staying with friends in Utah, and then in Vancouver, WA on our way to Seattle.
In Seattle, we'll need to get some furniture of some sort.
We'll figure it out as we go along.
It's really happening. It was really awesome staying with my aunt, my uncle, and my cousin, but Thursday here is my last day living here.
Going to go get the rental van soon!
I start working my new job in Seattle August 14th.
That's sooner than I would have liked, but totally reasonable. I'll have not been working for more than half a year by that point. I've more than decompressed, and now it's time to recompress and build good work-life habits. No reason to not do that while working.
Also, it's soon enough that I'll make sure to max out both 401K contributions and IRA contributions this year.
I think.
Still doing some maths and figuring out living arrangements and costs and stuff.
Didn't really do anything for the game jam, but glad I "tried", because now I want to work on game stuff a bit everyday.
I'd like to make one-hour goals. Make a goal I wish to accomplish in one hour. That's all I have to do.
Today, I want to take the Alucard spritesheet from Castlevania Crypt and parse out all the sprites.
This was one of the things I tried to do during the game jam and later abandoned because this spritesheet is a little annoying to pick out dynamically.
"Today" is incorrect, I want to display this spritesheet via Crafty.js and make progress towards splitting it into the individual sprites, and then eventually animating it.
I would like to make code that will be mostly reusuable for any other spritesheet I come across (e.g. Ninja Gaiden).
Okay, 22 hours or so remaining. Probably only like 10 hours of real work, if I'm in the zone. Let's start with gamejam_clone.
Nope, nevermind. Continuing to play FTL. Oh, well. I'm being really good about exercise, I think I can slowly improve programming discipline.
All right, now let's try to do some coding.
This is just an exercise in overcoming apathy now, or at least not falling back onto the websites I really don't want to have as a habit.
Going to setup node.js on my computer, haven't done that on windows before.
I have gutted my old game jam game to its bare essence. Will now play with it to meet this theme.
This has become me remembering I wanted to keep working on that old game jam game.
For the next 48-hours (starting 0300 UTC) I'll be doing the GMTK Game Jam. The theme is Downwell's Dual Purpose Design.
The first thing to do will be rewatch this video.
Lots of ideas floating around in head, not sure where to start exactly.
Well, actually, I'll start with my pygame_skeleton, because that's the gaming tool I've used the most recently.
Idea: game where player possesses each entity destroyed. So instead of destroying entity, you take it over new host and abandon previous host. The first host will actually be most-powerful and maneuverable, but is lost upon defeating first entity. The game would be designed to be beatable without killing any entity.
Only way to regain health is to possess new entity.
Point-and-click action game (because I want to continue playing with the mechanics of that).
I'm working with an artist, so let's give him a thing to work with to make art stuff.
Wow, pretty physically tired. Needed to go back to sleep for a few hours. Body is really feeling the past week of exercise. May start my two days off a day early.
Back to game jam stuff.
I think I'll start with some sprites I don't own instead of creating blocky sprites dynamically like I did last time.
Having looked at various sprite sheets from varous games, I think I'll just start with shapes and add drawings as they're available to me and figure it out later.
Let's have a box move to where I click.
I want to play more with the old click-jump mechanic that I've been playing with for a while now, but my implementation in pygame isn't working correctly. I'd rather not waste time getting it working again. Switching to javascript and crafty.
Wasn't feeling it, played FTL and then did some exercises. Feeling it now, though. Would like to have something up on this domain before going to sleep.
Probably should eat first, though.
Tiredness hitting me, will start fresh tomorrow. I should do a jam once a month to stay in practice with it. Not at all used to jamming in home environment.
I have job.
Will say more as things become concrete.
Also! I had weird dream where I got hired to be a key animator at some place even though I have no experience doing so. I asked why I was hired and the boss man said I came highly recommended by some person I didn't know. I decided to try and buckle down and learn enough to fake it.
Weird dream.
I have been really good about exercise. Managed 5 days in a row last week and am looking to be repeating that this week. Been alternating days between dancing and pull ups.
I really like how I feel after doing 5 minutes of pull ups. The exhaustion in my back and arms feels like I'm stronger than I am, for some paradoxial reason.
