Thinking

Had trouble falling asleep last night. I think it was the heat. I may look into getting an air conditioner. I'm marking today as "sleep deprived" even though I feel pretty good, still. According to my fitbit, I got a little over 6 hours of sleep. Typically, it reports a little over 7 hours. So a loss of an hour. Which I believe is in territory where I am impaired but may not notice.

I have switched my phone alarm to 0505. Watch alarm is still 0500. This is to see if watch wakes me up, but if it doesn't, not lose too much time. Watch woke me up today, which is good.

Expected to be sorer today than I am. Yesterday I was pretty exhausted, too. Lots of laying down on the floor in my office (standing desk only, no chair in room). But, as per usual, once I was engaged in the game I'm playing, I didn't note my exhaustion. I have been practicing entering this state at work. It was something I worked on last year, to great success. I am getting better at it this year with my recent crop of rules.

I set a timer to limit my interaction with this post, but am now staying with the task until the timer alarm rings. I believe that in the long run, building this habit will be stronger than the flexibility of switching when I am done with a task.

And with that the bell rings and it is time for work.

Thinking

Low intensity climbing yesterday went really well. It was still really tiring, and I thought I'd be sore today, but I am not. I was capable of focusing on form, which I think will help when struggling against the harder challenges like I plan to today. I noticed that I have become more flexible, even though I missed about a week of stretching. Doing it everyday for a bit helped considerably, I suppose.

I'm also still losing weight despite what I consider a terrible diet. I'll need to convince myself to clean up my diet for health reasons as opposed to weight reasons (I'm consuming a lot of sugar per day right now).

Started a project yesterday: One FIRE at a Time. I'll link to its github once there's something more than a rough-draft README. MVP is a python prototype, but I'd like to make it a website at some point.

In any case, it's time for me to go to the climb gym.

Thinking

What's this? Personal pomodoros? You better believe it, Teresa.

It's only because:

  1. need to go to climb gym before I'm allowed gaming/twitter/youtube
  2. I need to go to the farmer's market today and it's near the climb gym and it opens at 0800
  3. Today is an easy day at the climb gym, so staying there for 2 hours is a no go

What's an easy day? Walking there (no running), stretching, only the easiest climbing challenges, and (probably) no working out afterwards (read: pull-ups and inclined situps). Though, we'll see exactly what it means once I'm there.

My goal is to go to the climb gym every day, but only do a hard workout on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. I also plan on yoga on Tuesday, Wesnesday, and Thursday.

The reason I want to go to the gym every day is to erase the friction of actually going to the gym. Getting to the gym is the hard part, doing stuff at the gym once I'm there is easy. By going every day I hope to ingrain the habit, and then I can more easily develop a healthy workout regiment and also make healthy goals (I want abs and I want to do lots of fingertip pullups).

The plan right now is to just organize for the next hour, but I may instead want to make a simple script to divvy up my savings and decide what I've paid off for life. I wonder if I should include 401k and IRA money in this equation. I think only necessary expenses can be included in those number. With the Roth conversion ladder, I will have access to that money within the first decade of retirement (if needed), so I think that rule works.

Thinking

Yesterday, I had trouble being productive. I still did some good work, but only 4 pomodoros worth. This is due to several factors:

  • Am addicted to a video game now, and its temptation is harder to ignore when WFH
  • I had to WFH because wife was ill and maybe needed my assistance with things
  • I am not coding but writing docs and making plans for future coding

Documentation creation is not a habit I have internalized, and so it is both more draining than regular work (regular work sometimes even provides energy) and also something that is easier for me to get distracted out of. There are little tricks I'm experimenting with to keep me in hyperfocus, but it'll be a bit before the rules are finalized and then even longer to internalize those rules.

I'll do a bit to formalize those rules later. Now it is time to go to work.

Thinking

Last night was first normal amount of sleep since I left for quakecon. Which means I'm still sleep deprived, I think, because of a week's worth of less than optimal sleep, but I should eventually even out. My impulse control this morning isn't great, and I'm planning to give into it a bit by playing some Factorio before starting work proper. We'll see if this is a terrible plan, but my therapist says I need to work on flexibility, so let's see if I can make it work.

I've decided to wait until this weekend to start working out again. I'll do both days this weekend, and then do proper workouts Sunday/Tuesday/Thursday from there on out. I'll still go to the gym on off days, but I'll only walk to/from there, and I'll only stretch and maybe do the easiest climbing challenges on those days.

Didn't get into bed last night until a bit after 2100. Ideally, I should be in bed by 2030 so I can be asleep by 2100. So, still sleep deprived on last night's sleep amount alone, and the poor sleep from the night before is culminating on top of that. Though, I've increased my sleep amount from yesterday to today (4 hours to 7 hours).

I might go to bed as soon as 2000 today and allow 9 hours to do a bit of "catching up" (scare quotes because Why We Sleep has a section in it that explicitly says that catching up on sleep is impossible).

Time to go to work.

I did not end up fixing my sleep schedule the night of the previous log date. I stayed up until 0500 CDT. I have become addicted to Factorio, which is a neat game, but something I'll need to very carefully play.

I'm pretty sure that turning off my wrist alarm is a habit ingrained enough that I can turn it off in my sleep completely. Which is unfortunate. However, the regular phone alarm currently works. I'll have both go off at the same time until I have the wake up habit again and then I'll try turning off the phone alarm.

In any case, it's time to go to work.

Passed out for a bit yesterday. Was really tired. Unable to wake up at 0700 this morning. Might want to adjust my wake up time to 0800 or 0900. Better that then to develop a habit of turning off my alarm and going back to sleep.

I'll go ahead and change it to 0900 right now.

I'll try to get enough sleep every night and allow a slight sleep deprivation Tuesday to wake up at 0500 again.
