Dream:

I dreamt I was visiting a house where my parents were. I was hooking up various consoles into a television. I played a game that doesn't exist. I packed up to fly home and forgot my clothes. I told my dad as I was leaving. He told me that he found some important piece of equipment in the pipes and that I must've flushed them. Not recalling this in the slightest, I pushed back.

I've already lost a lot of the dream.

Last year, I started volunteering for IGDA. It also marks the day where I started taking having a blog post everyday seriously. Soon we'll see my timeblock show up.

Exciting.

Wed Sep 05 04:58:24 UTC 2018

I was thinking about bus fares and pretax dollars yesterday. I believe the way to think about it is that every $0.75 I spend could be a $1 if it's pretaxed. So, if I spend $120 on bus money each month, that's ($120/0.75 - $120) = $40 saved per month. Or $480 per year.

Same goes for using my FSA on health care spending.

Wed Sep 05 05:02:18 UTC 2018

I am really tired today. Normally, on a day like today, it's all too easy to not get any work done. But I have minimums I'm trying to achieve. And when I start a pomodoro that means doing work. And so I got 8 work pomodoros in. Deployed 2 PRs and have another one ready for review.

Ended up being a good, productive day.

I broke down a bunch of my money-stuffs yesterday. I noted a savings rate of 16.9% but mentioned that I don't count 401k.

This may be a mistake. I set aside $770 per paycheck. Meaning that if I counted that money as saved, my savings rate for (what I consider a bad spending month) was 30%. Which is significantly better.

Though, I'm also just looking at the paycheck and not at my salary. Like, I could also consider how much I'm paying in taxes. Which would have its value, because it then incentivizes minimizing paying taxes. Of which I could start making efforts.

Like, for example, I seem to pay about $120 on bus fares per month. That could be pretax dollars, and come with tax savings of.... I'm not actually sure how to do that math.

I should also take advantage of tax incentives and stuff.

Basically, it may be smart to look at my paystub every paycheck and put more data into income vs. expenses. I could split my paychecks in YNAB to do this, even.

Tue Sep 04 05:30:53 UTC 2018

I answered a customer email today. That's all the work I did.

I took it somewhat easy during climbing today. At the very least, it didn't super exhaust me like climbing last week did. Not feeling too fatigued or sore, either. Regressed a bit on the challenge I've been working on. Couldn't get quite as far. This is fine, though. Progress is chaotic.

I managed some time for IGDA admin stuff today. Also, more investment setup stuff. I have some time-sensitive stuff to do with IGDA, but after that I may want to return to remaking my pomodoro timer. By which I mean start over again, because I've decided to do that for sure now. I have proven there's too much value in my current, hacked-together system to really ignore the potential value of a properly put-together setup.

Reading today:

Today I finished reading the Pragmatic Programmer. I have various reminders in Wunderlist to talk about concepts I really liked in the book, or give me vocabularly to communicate my own experiences. Good book, I recommend it.

Spending for August.

CATEGORIES SPENDING
QUAKECON! $2,160.74
Shared Expense $1,854.62
Just for Fun $1,065.33
Food $642.70
Debt Payments $350.00
Medical $227.64
Transportation $127.82
Tools - Rosse $79.73
Tools - Rory $79.00
Quality of Life Goal $74.87
All Other Categories $17.56
Income vs Expenses Amount
INCOME $8040.80
TOTAL SPENDING $6680.01
NET GAIN $1360.79
SAVINGS RATE 16.9%

So... spent a lot of my income this month. Though, of note I'm not counting 401k contributions (maxing it out) as part of my income, nor am I paying attention to interest on what I already have in my index fund.

Oh, also, I'm just going to go ahead and be open about income and stuff now. $137k is my current salary. Plus get about $4k per year in a lunch stipend (but that will go away if my company ever starts catering lunch in the Seattle office).

My current savings break down thusly:

Accounts Amount
BANK MINUS CREDIT CARDS $36,521.25
VANGUARD IRA (ROLLOVER) $64,248.10
VANGURAD MIXPANEL 401K $11,851.35
RINCON ESOP $42,400.00
BETTERMENT $13,753.39
STUDENT LOAN DEBT -$11,320.51
NET WORTH $157,453.58
Mon Sep 03 00:38:15 UTC 2018

And... I just realized all of my vanguard IRA was in the settlement fund. Aka, where the money is before you've invested it into something. Thus for the past bit of time it's been making basically nothing (it makes some minimum amount of dividends, it seems).

I've just done a transfer of $50k into a target 2055 retirement fund. And next week I'll do something with the rest. I'm still figuring it out.

I've also move $9k from my bank account into a personal account. Another $6k will follow by the end of the month. That'll be my "computer replacement" fund. The hope being I only take money out once it's made enough to pay for a new computer (so a $3000 computer every 5 years or so).

Because buying a computer is never a necessity, I suppose it can be a high risk stock setup.

Hmmmm....

I have no idea what I'm doing.

Mon Sep 03 01:30:08 UTC 2018

I have signed up for a personal capital account. It has free financial tools and then tries to convince you to invest with them. I'll use their tools for help getting started and from there... I'll figure stuff out?

Mon Sep 03 01:33:36 UTC 2018

Back to weekly review.

It feels like my dream recalling is improving? Does just asking the question about my dream help me remember my dream? Cursory googling suggests yes, it does. Though I could do better.

I wonder if recalling dreams increases the chances of lucid dreams. I mean, on one hand, it'd have to, as perhaps I'm forgetting my lucid dreams.

I'll keep a notebook downstairs for better dream recollection purposes. I don't use my notebooks anymore lately, anyways, as I haven't been doodling and like writing via computers more. Even my little notebook isn't used for capture, as I've been using Wunderlist on my phone instead.

On August 30th, I mentioned hackathon-esque goals for this weekend. It instead became "clean up various tasks I've built up across the months". Which is also good. I also hope to finally:

  • Update my driver's license
  • Get a new passport
  • Gain my Canadian documentation

Over the course of this month. Tuesday I'll try to get a new driver's license. And then each week start the process for the other things.

Mon Sep 03 03:04:32 UTC 2018

Empty my head:

Well, I've kinda just did that with various action processing through emails, wunderlist, trello, and inbox. I've done a decent amount of things I've been meaning to do this weekend but consistently putting off. And it feels real good.

I still have a large list of things, mind you, but even that large list has been reorganized into edible chunks. Which hopefully means I can keep it at a maintainable level.

I devoted a lot of pomodoros to my weekly review today. It may be wise to do such a thing once a month until things are truly in a maintainable state. Or, rather, until all the things are in my system and there are tools in place for me to process things when it is properly appropriate.

Which is a long ways away, to be sure. I have projects not captured and messy state to organize. Both in the digital world and the physical one. My desk has a huge mess in the corner of things left over from building my computer that needs to be filed or trashed.

Due to all the processing pomodoros I've done this weekend, I've managed to outpace my personal pomodoro-count from last week. That's real good! It's also real good considering I was super exhausted both yesterday and today except for when here at my computer doing pomodoros.

Though some of my energy today may be due to the black tea I had at 1600.

Anyways, a pomodoro just ended and I've done enough pomodoros for one weekly review.

No real need to do the normal review the day stuff, as a lot of it was captured in the weekly review.

It's a brand new month, Stephan. Which means this weekly review will have a break down of my spending in August. Maybe I'll build some kind of monthly review habit.

Got a huge list of tickler items (both physical and digital) to process today. Probably worth its own pomodoro.

I'll also want to do some Vanguard stuff (like setting up my computer replacement fund).

Trello, JIRA, and wunderlist actions can wait until weekly review or even have a pomodoro to themselves today.

Sat Sep 01 16:19:36 UTC 2018

Lots of little action items in my ticklers today, so let's just crush some of 'em.

Sat Sep 01 17:23:45 UTC 2018

Huh. My JAWBONE device won't function without a JAWBONE app, but the company is out of business and the app defunct. Into the electronics garbage bin it goes.

"Work has been a bit of an emotional rollercoaster, but I think I'm going to come out of it better than I entered it." - A month ago

You thought right, me.

I'm OpsLead for a fraction of this weekend, and wouldn't you know, I got a page during that. It looks like I just need to rerun something so that's what I'm doing.

Taking a well-deserved weekend break from climbing, though I got new climbing shoes! I waited too long to recobble the old ones.... They'll be my emergency pair when it comes time to fix the new ones, I think.

Instead of personal projects, today was addressing the long list of small actions I've let build up. I got through a significant chunk of it, but then wife wanted to do something so I went and did new climbing shoe stuff early.

This thoroughly exhausted me. Though it seems I may have made the mistake of not trying to do another pomodoro upon getting home, because finally doing one now... my energy is coming back.

Oh, well, tomorrow is now open for me to do some stuff. It looks like before personal projects I have a bunch of basic personal maintenance to adhere to. I've gotten through a good chunk of it, and Wunderlist is helping me organize it in a way I like. I got through a bunch of stuff today, I'll do a little overview of what I have left to do tomorrow, and then I'll do my weekly review, and then some IGDA stuff, and then I'll think about what I need to do for personal projects.

Further exhausted myself with reading comics and watching YouTube. I need to start the habit of just starting a pomodoro. Or rather, any strat that is not giving me energy needs to be axed shortly into attempting it, including pomodoros if they're just not working.

Lots of browser reading today:

  • Twitter
  • Freethought Blogs | Pharyngula
  • Love Joy Feminism
  • Awkward Zombie (webcomic)

Listening:

Watching:

Yeah, I'm feeling a lot better doing this pomodoro. How many times do I need to learn this lesson? At work I've been doing great because I can't wait too long before starting a pomodoro before feeling like I'm falling behind.

I just need to have the same attitude about that at home, I guess.

Let's apply that lesson tomorrow!

Sat Sep 01 05:04:44 UTC 2018

This is the mensiversary of the shock to my system (aka the day I was told I wasn't doing enough work).

And what a contrast. To quote my tech lead:

1
2
you are really getting to the next level
keep doing this please

In comparison to last week, I've managed 49 pomodoros again this week. Also played another board game with peers today. Might become a weekly Friday thing. In any case, I'm pretty satisfied with my pomodoro count. People are really commenting on the work I'm achieving, so maybe going for more isn't strictly necessary. Might be good to focus on quality/efficiency of work from here and maintain quantity.

And in comparison to yesterday, I managed 12 work pomodoros today... at the expense of working late and also doing another one when I got home. But! It's good that I did, because I caught a bug elsewhere that broke the old version of the product my team is in charge of. I both pushed a new feature and fixed the old setup. Hence the praise from my tech lead.

Also, I worked late because I was addicted to the problem. It was fun. I've made work a game. I just gotta be careful to not overplay it or pick it over other things when I shouldn't.

And I'm doing a good job with keeping climbing in my schedule. My body's pretty exhausted from the last week of climbing. It's going to be a solid weekend of rest this weekend for sure. The blister on my finger prevented me from practicing the challenge I've been focusing on, so I tried a variety of new and old problems alike.

So, I wasn't really planning on personal project time today. Though I did timeblock for it, I was thinking I'd replace that with time with friend who is in town. Instead, I replaced it with more work (and maybe technically a board game with work friends). But still, I gots to make sure this is getting the time it needs, both for my personal growth and for the satisfaction of doign things in my spare time. Tomorrow I hope to catch up a bit, but next week I'd like to return to 2 personal project pomodoros per weekday again.

Though, also I might be able to do something with Monday (holiday). We'll see.

I was talking to a friend just before this review, and he noted I used the word "emotional barrier" a lot. Something to write about in-depth tomorrow.

Reading today:

  • Twitter
  • Love Joy Feminism
  • Freethoughtblogs | Pharyngula

  • Mixpanel Blog

I'll have more to say about my twitter habits lately tomorrow, as well (related to the emotional barrier).

No listening.

No watching.

G'night.

The posts I've reviewed have reminded me:

  • Do a pomodoro to gain energy (it happens!)
  • Rubber-duck debug habits as well as code

Also, as an aside, I've been super hungry this week. Must really be doing exhausting climbing. Weight has also notably been steady. As my wife says, "It's good to listen to your body." Been eating plenty, and I think my wife is right (as per usual).

Got 10 pomodoros in today! Woo. Let's do that again tomorrow. Also, got lots of stuff in motion. Should have a feature pushed tomorrow, should have the momentum to do a huge change to lots of things going forward. Also going to improve my API logging and tracking.

My 1:1 with my boss has led to some forward thinking. Now that I'm in a good place, task-wise, let's grow more, is basically the gist. Need to decide my career-path a bit: manager or architect (to use the words given in the meeting). It was a good contrast of leadership styles, I think. Basically, you lead other people vs. people come to you and get your feedback on your expertise.

I think I could manage, but also would like to keep coding, maybe. Will need to maybe play with some tasks that lead me further down both paths until I decide.

A friend's in town so I skipped personal projects again. Probably will do so again tomorrow. Going to have to try to make up for it on Saturday. Though, I'm also pretty tired between extra effort in climbing and evolving at work. I might need some time to acclimate? I still want to do soemthing this weekend. I was going to try the GMTK game jam again, but now I might just treat it as a hackathon to get an MVP out of one of the projects I want to do?

I'll read some Pragmatic Programmer before bed, I think.

There were two dreams last night, somewhat connected:

There was an early part of my dream in a bathroom that I don't remember that well, and don't care that much about because it was in a bathroom. At some point I was playing a magical game of chess where the pieces moved on their own (I wasn't thinking of Harry Potter at the time, I don't think, though the person I was playing against was about to go wait in line for a book).

There was straight-up a montage in my dream of moves, and then I do checkmate, but my opponent cheats and says their game of chess is slightly different.

I leave and find myself in my grandpa's house. My wife is there. She's trying to watch an anime they rented. It looks like a 2-in-1 DVD setup. I feel like I had already seen the second one, which was about to start. Everyone else whom I knew wanted to watch it had decided to leave. Though how I knew these things I don't know.

I sit down and try to help with TV stuff. The TV is too loud for some reason and I try to mute it. First, I can't find the mute button, and once I finally find it on one of the several remotes available, pressing it causes the TV to turn off, and Christmas lights in the room to turn on. "Grandpa and his custom programming of remotes...."

My sister-in-law is now in the room, and I think about how it's been such a long time since I've been to grandpa's house. And it dawns on me. I can't be in grandpa's house. They sold it after he died. It wouldn't even look like this if I was actually there. It was remodeled.

"I'm in a dream!" I tell my sister-in-law confidently.

She seems to take offense at this statement. "I'm leaving," and she walks off. I go to find my brother.

I find him downstairs at a table that was never in that room. "Bro! I'm dreaming!" I say as I make the table levitate. I find I'm unable to return things to normal. "I'm still learning how to control my lucid dreams."

Then my brother and I talk about things I can't remember. Eventually I find myself outside, alone. It is at this point that I trick myself into thinking I've woken up, I think. My wife comes to me, "What are you doing alone in the dark outside?"

"I was having an imaginary conversation with my brother."

The next dream starts as some sort of work retreat. And we're getting treats from the place we're staying, but it's only "dairy-free", not vegan. But suddenly it's not that setting or purpose anymore and I'm with my family, and my grandpa is there. He's complaining about something, I don't remember what he said.

"You're just a mass hallucination," I say at him. "You're not really here." Tears start to well up. "You died when I was in high school. You died over ten years ago." I'm basically weeping now. "Ten years!"

Today was a WFH day again. Seems this week getting in the pomodoros is slightly more difficult than last week. Clocked in 9 each day so far. Was hoping to get 12 today to make up for the last two days. That I'm disappointed with 9 is a really good sign of my progress, but I'd still like to get one or two 10s in this week. Got two more chances.

More importantly, though, is that yesterday I made a commitment to have something ready-for-review today, and today I had that thing ready-for-review. Making accurate estimates, woo.

Today was also an important lesson. I started off the day just feeling exhausted, but after a couple of forced pomodoros I had the momentum and energy to get a solid day of work in. I think this is something to keep in mind on Saturdays with personal project stuff.

Climbing is super tiring again. And the blisters are sprouting again. Practicing pieces of climbing challenges that are just beyond my capability is inducing the same symptoms I had when I first started climbing. Which is good! Means I'm going to see a jump in capability like when I started, I think.

Another day of no personal projects. I had chores to deal with today (and decided to cook something that takes a while). I believe I should be able to make time tomorrow, as well as Friday.

That error the customer was having? Magically disappeared. That's not good enough for the data-management team, though I did prioritize other work today. My tech lead tracked down some errors and found an error log from my code. Exploration found code that I fixed shortly after the customer noted the problem.

I fixed a problem a customer was having by finding it myself before even knowing the customer found it. It was fixed as part of a feature PR.

That felt pretty awesome.

I caught myself going down one of my bad habits today whilst working on a feature, and managed to curb that, put in a TODO, and then do the minimum viable thing to a working setup to commit and get feedback on.

I also got various little PRs in, and some JIRA tickets in for future work. Tomorrow I'd like to get my tooltip code reviewed by others and ready to be deployed (may need to wait to deploy on someone else's work). I would also like to improve logging such that errors are easily replicateable in the future.

Last night, I read the Pragmatic Programmer before bed as planned. It got to a book recommendation: Large scale c++ software design. Which I've put in my appropriate lists.

I read some twitter and FiveThirtyEight today as well. Didn't disrupt my productivity, which is good.

No listening today.

You may notice that sometimes I pomodoroize meetings and sometimes I don't. When I feel I can be an active participant in a meeting, it's a pomodoro, if I can't, it's not. Non-active-participant meetings can be valuable (e.g. all-hands and the seattle prodeng standup), but they aren't deep work, and that's what pomodoros are a proxy for. But active meetings by me can very much be deep work, so I try to have a pomodoro during those.

Work was hectic and long today. Lots of meetings and events, and I have pomodoro goals I want to make. My pomodoros for today ended up at 9. A solid number. I have several PRs in the oven waiting on feedback (one baked and deployed). Though some of that will need to be on hold tomorrow whilst I track down API errors a customer is seeing. I'm not sure what's causing it. It's possible some middleware or permissions decorator is failing before my code is even reached. That'll be the main priority tomorrow.

Climbing went pretty solid today. I decided to focus on the green cave problem that I made slight progress on last time. It's setup such that I can "cheat" and restart where I fail until significantly far into the problem. So I made sure I could get to a point from the beginning, and then I practiced going futher from there. I managed to figure out how to get all the way to a part that I can't just cheat start at.

It's possible I may be able to finish this challenge Wednesday. It's also possible the challenge will disappear before I finish it. Fun times.

No time for personal projects today. That's okay, that'll happen sometimes. I also have a scoreboard for personal pomodoros, and so I have goals to meet there, too (do as well as last week or better). I think I'll do better this week than last week, and hopefully the weekend will be solid this week, as well.

Today was the feedback day from the shock to my system. Which is a really abstract way to say that my probation period ended at work. Everything's going very well! There's some stuff for me to be working on, but I've been vocal and aware of those things, and I plan to make progress.

However, this process has helped me realize that my self-reflection has plenty of blind spots, and even skewed priorities. This is where getting other people's opinions and perspective helps me a lot.

But when I don't have that luxury, I can rubber-duck debug my own bad behavior.

Which is something I'll work on going forward. I think this Saturday, for example, if I'm having trouble starting pomodoros, I'll start a pomodoro devoted to chatting at myself in this diary about what I'm trying to do and why I think it isn't working.

No reading today, but I'll read some the Pragmatic Programmer before bed, I think.

No listening today.

Dream:

I dreamt that I was visiting Phoenix, AZ. At some point I decided to start taking classes at ASU. I found out my friends Vineet and Violet were also taking classes there. The dream shifted focus on this one class. A kind of philosophy class? Lots of questions on logic and its entanglement with emotion.

The final exam was an essay on this. I mentioned something about a strange rock and me and the professor went to it. Its shape seemed to model the road it was on. For some reason, I really wanted a structure down the curvature of the road to be dismantled to make this rock more perfectly emulate the street. The professor then started dismantling it. The last brick in the structure was purple, and I wanted it, and so the professor started to give it to me.

But then an officer came up and arrested the professor for dismantling the structure. I was extremely upset. Bawling. The professor managed to give me the purple brick but I demanded to be arrested too because it was my idea in the first place.

In lockup, the professor managed to give me the purple brick and congratulated me on acing the final exam.

That's all I remember.

Some insights from the week's posts:

The goals from Pragmatic Programmer noted last week. I'll put them in my inbox in wunderlist.

A major insight of today: if work is feeling really hard, start a pomodoro.... Advice I should've followed today.
