Last year, I saw the recent Spiderman movie. I also wrote down a concept Andrew had shared with me (back then he was Jesse) of emotional debt. I still find the term useful.

Fri Jul 06 14:13:51 UTC 2018

Last month, I got last year's post off by a month and reviewed July 6th, 2017. Oops.

A month ago is when I started being capable of doing personal pomodoros at home. I should be back in the thick of that today!

Sat Jul 07 04:25:44 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I had a productive work-from-vancouver day, and came back home to Seattle.

Sat Jul 07 04:26:28 UTC 2018

Today was a good work day. Finally was in a good spot on what I needed to do to just settle down and code. I got to a good spot. I may want to go to work tomorrow for a lil' bit and just do a bunch of things I want to get done.

We'll see. I may also want to get some quality personal project time in (it has been left wanting a lot).

Last Monday was a hard climb today, and today was vastly superior. I was capable of flashing a few new routes (both V1 and V2), and I managed to complete all routes I had been successful at least one time before (which wasn't true last Monday).

Also, no new blisters!

I devoted a half-hour to my new timer today. It should've been a half-hour, but it seems I am recovering from my short bout of poor productivity. I guess I was recovering from the work trip after all. My sleep is also relatively normalized.

I've been listening to Capital in the 21st Century, and I was thinking about how capital ownership should be what social security really is. None of this the government owes us that, it should be in a blind trust or something like that. And then labor collectively grows their share of capital.

Sat Jul 07 04:33:53 UTC 2018

Today I watched:

....

I think that's it? I might've missed something. I really, really wanted to go to Twitter today but I reminded myself that I never find it a valuable experience after the fact.

Adding a new sleep question: do you remember your dream? Because sometimes I do but I have nothing in place to capture it whilst writing in this diary. Last night was a lucid dream. I dreamt that I was being fired for having literally slept through all of spring. Even with my dream brain I realized the logic was bad. I concluded I was sleeping, and wasn't much liking the dream, so I willed myself awake....

Into another dream. And thus stopped thinking I was in a dream.

This isn't a particularly unique dream. I do this a lot.

Anyways, after "waking up", I decided to use my telekinesis to cheat at gambling and win millions of dollars. Figuring that this would set the mafia after me, I decided to hide my ill-gotten gains... in another casino?

And that's all that I remember.

Fri Jul 06 04:05:23 UTC 2018

Last year, I started building a pull-up habit (it didn't stick).

Fri Jul 06 04:05:40 UTC 2018

Last month, I was thinking over the problem of not being as productive at work as I'd like, pomodoro-wise.

I was also pretty happy that I was (and still am) regularly updating my system as I find flaws in my methodology.

Fri Jul 06 04:08:24 UTC 2018

Last week was the first day of the Tahoe trip.

Fri Jul 06 04:09:51 UTC 2018

Yesterday was a solid 4th of July morning with family and evening with friends.

Fri Jul 06 04:10:23 UTC 2018

Today was a solid work day! Though my pomodoro-count would disagree (it'll be two after this review). That's because today was a lot of discussing things with coworkers and making sure we have the same vision of success (which we did not).

It's also confirmation that I can do good work while on travel. Something I'll keep in mind moving forward.

Climbing has been sporadic lately due to travel, but I'll be back at it tomorrow and I'm excited.

Personal projects hopefully will be back to full speed tomorrow. I'm feeling much better, productively speaking, than I was last Monday.

Today, I listened to some of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban whilst driving back to Seattle. It's a fun listen.

I read an article by Film Crit Hulk about Star Wars: The Beautiful, Ugly, and Possessive Hearts of Star Wars.

I watched some YouTube:

I'll watch some random video whilst winding down after this post. Which, well, it's time to stop now.

Just a quick read of my past posts. If there's something really worth noting, I'll write something here.

Today was much more productive, work-wise, than yesterday.

I didn't make time for personal projects... again. Don't have another opportunity really until Friday.

On the drive to Vancouver/Portland, the wife and I started listening to Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Watched a lot of YouTube again today:

Outsiders: How to Adapt H.P. Lovecraft in the 21st Century

I watched a lot of other YouTube, but I don't remember what I watched. Must've not been that valuable.

I also regressed a bit and read some Twitter. Got nothing out of it. Will try again to not visit today.

Last year, I discussed the strats I was using to avoid going to time wasting sites.

Those strats didn't stay effective.

Lately, experience has been super effective in keeping me going. I know these reviews have proven valuable. I know I can't give into apathy via a lack of energy. I know I can have a stable sleep schedule given the right self-guided environment.

I know that reddit is not valuable to me, and that any time it looks legitimate to use is a slipery slope towards wasting my time on it. Thus, I don't even use the more helpful versions of reddit. For example, if there's an answer to a question I have on reddit, I still don't go. Usually that answer is somewhere else, but if I continue to have trouble, I'll ask someone for help. That someone else may end up answering my question via reddit, but I won't go to reddit.

The same is now true of twitter. I'm also developing a habit of not reading the comments. Comments are not valuable. They are low-quality content piggybacking on content I find interesting or valuable.

Anyways, moving on.

Tue Jul 03 02:54:11 UTC 2018

Last month was my first super productive Saturday. What a contrast to today, a super unproductive workday.

But I'm not frustrated at that contrast. I know that I can do better, and I know today isn't necessarily a sign or trend of negative progress moving forward. I'm tired today, and things are hard because of that, but I'm still pushing through on various things. Tomorrow will be better.

Tue Jul 03 02:56:29 UTC 2018

Last week was a super productive workday. Wow, parallels in the days I'm reviewing, and contrast to today. That's another reason why I've started reviewing the past, lots of good stuff like this.

Tue Jul 03 02:58:29 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I was tired. And yet I still managed to do my planning, my weekly review, and my end of day review. There was an optimism in my plan, and I tried to plan for timer work, but I'm glad I ended up not doing any. I'm not glad that I failed to do that work today.

Tomorrow, I'll start the day with timer stuff to make sure I get some work done there.

Tue Jul 03 03:00:57 UTC 2018

Today was a bust as far as any productivity goes. I just couldn't summon the energy after lunch. Before lunch, I barely managed the plan for the day. I'm hoping it's just me still recovering from slight sleep destabilization from the Tahoe trip. I'll go to bed early and try with MAX POWER tomorrow.

Climbing was hard, too, but I managed to get some good exercise in today.

I'm hoping to reignite personal project progress again tomorrow morning. I won't be doing any such work on the 4th or 5th, however, as I'll be traveling to Vancouver and have a hard rule about no personal work on work-work laptop (my only laptop right now).

I've managed some listening of Capital in the Twenty-First Century and it's some good stuff. I'll try to have specific thinking on it sometime this week.

I watched a bunch of stuff today (not proud of it, but am open about it).

Time to play some Overwatch.

Further thinking on one hand-written note: analysis of variance or ANOVA. This is a methodology for testing multiple variables at once and then finding a means of measuring the effect of any one variable. Mastery of this concept is probably necessary if I wish to do A/B/C/D/etc testing. And being able to visualize such data in tools such as Mixpanel or Amplitude is a necessary part of that.

Sun Jul 01 16:36:17 UTC 2018

Last week I discussed wanting to devote time specifically for cleaning house (aka moving actions from emails to trello). I think a reordering of the checklist is in order to do the things I want. Also, I'm moving free-form stuff to the end because they can take up a lot of time (and maybe get their own pomodoro today).

Sun Jul 01 17:23:58 UTC 2018

All right, time to empty my head.

There's a lot in there right now, but I think the main thing to talk about is 7 Habits and what I plan to do with what I've gained from the book.

There are a few things this book mentioned that reminded me of things I used to do, that I have stopped doing, but should reignite. First: not talking about people behind their back. I used to call that out when a part of the conversation and say, "Unless this is practice for what we're going to say to them, we shouldn't be talking about them like this." I want to start doing this again.

Another thing that the book explicitly brought up that I've made progress on and then regressed on is "Seeking First to Understand". Right now, I'm actually pretty good at saying, "I don't understand." But in some cases, I just state that and stop, I make no real effort to understand. There are, for instance, many completely alien things to me, like my wife's disability, that I had decided that admitting it was alien was good enough.

It's because I'd "listen to reply" and not "listen to understand". I realized the former was bad, but I never properly considered just trying to understand. So I've talked with my wife and I'll work on proper reflection of what she tells me she's going through in an effort to improve my understanding.

And this line of thinking led me to politics. There are two lines of thought here. One, I should seek relationship and true understanding of the oppressed whom I wish to be an ally. And two, I should seek understanding of those whom political choices I consider evil. Both are important to travel down and execute, but I think one should have priority and happen first before two.

Two is, as it turns out, easier to start attempting than one. I have family and acquaintances in two. Further understanding them without further understanding the oppressed is problematic, however, because they're already getting lots of media attention and the like bending-over backward to show their humanity and justifying (not necessarily understanding) their actions.

One requires me to get to know some such people. A situation I don't readily find myself in. The best I can do right now is watch and read content from such people. Which I do a little bit of, but.... I have a long way to go. My circle of peers should include such people as well. I need to be intolerant of the lack of diversity in my peers.

Perhaps an answer there is to start going to Not This Time or Black Lives Matter meetings.

Anyways, this marks the end of my weekly review.

Last month was a great day until it wasn't. I gave specifics the next day. I said all I need to say on it, I think.

Mon Jul 02 04:30:27 UTC 2018

Last week, I started having a list of things to write about to review the day. I had a lot to say this day. I recently succeeded at the bouldering problem that skinned my hands. I'm almost fully healed from that as well. I still think it was worth it.

Mon Jul 02 04:32:53 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I got back from Tahoe.

Mon Jul 02 04:33:32 UTC 2018

Excited to get back to climbing tomorrow. I wonder what's different.

I didn't make time for my timer today. Or rather, I didn't adhere to the time I set aside for timer today. This is okay. Weekly review was the right choice, and otherwise I had a good, lazy Sunday.

I just started listening to Capital in the 21st Century. I think I'm going to like it a lot.

I watched some Overwatch YouTube with the wife today.

Mon Jul 02 04:36:12 UTC 2018

I have started YNAB today, Stephan. I first got the free-trial way back when I lived in Tucson. I literally never used it. They gave it to me again six months later. Didn't use it. They've given it to me again. Using it.

I think I have structure in place to use it, and it fits right in with how I've been improving my life in other areas of life. Aka, capture data without judgement, then make plans to influence future data.

I mean, it wants me to start with budgets right away, but I'll really just use it to accurately reflect spending at first, and then use my knowledge of the tool to use it as intended after however long I feel is right.

Anyways, I'm way past time on my pomodoro, time to wind down.

Last year, I broke a string of silence. It was to make a vow of removing reddit from my life. It took almost another year before I finally stopped properly. I have confidence it will last. I'm also hopeful that twitter has joined reddit now.

Sun Jul 01 04:25:08 UTC 2018

Last month is when I started making the planning part of my day a pomodoro. I did this pomodoro at work, but decided I should start doing it at home. This ended up being very powerful, past me. Thank you.

I don't think a play-by-play of today is valuable. There was a lot of hanging out, and even some FTL. Instead of that, which was fun and useful for vacation purposes, let's get back to the checklist.

Work starts again on Monday. I'll be doing two workdays out of office (one from home on Tuesday, and one from Vancouver on Thursday). I want to get to a crappy MVP that we push in front of customers and iterate on quickly. My mentor at work gave some good advice there, I think.

Climbing also begins again on Monday, and I'm curious to see what'll be new at the gym.

Sun Jul 01 04:32:45 UTC 2018

The last week wasn't particularly kind to my personal projects. Tomorrow morning, before the wife wakes up, I'd like to get in an hour of timer remaking. But I also still need to do my weekly review, which is more important.

Sun Jul 01 04:33:33 UTC 2018

So, over the Tahoe work retreat, I skimmed Visualizing Data. This is one of those fun accomplishments where having developed a system (starting from a core of GTD) to capture every little thing has helped past me remind future me of little goals like reading this book.

And I'll talk a bit more about my history with this book and what I got out of this book tomorrow.

Also, I finished 7 Habits, and will talk about what I got out of that book a little tomorrow, as well.

Last month, I took an early flight home to Seattle and basically did my first day seriously trying pomodoros at work.

Sat Jun 30 17:03:25 UTC 2018

Last week was my wife's birthday. I noted how it was too easy to fracture my focus when there are meetings, and that I need to take the time I have to make pomodoros work on such day.

Sat Jun 30 17:06:23 UTC 2018

Yesterday was the first day in Tahoe. I did a play-by-play of the day.

Sat Jun 30 17:07:04 UTC 2018

Today... well, I'm writing about the day the next day. I woke up, got some breakfast. Vegan options were scarce, so I had a lot of potatoes. I also got a soy latte from Starbucks.

I spent an hour at the beach. I got there before the crowd showed up, and I shared a large section of the beach with two other people. The water was great (others said it was too cold). There was also paddle-boarding. The first attempt I fell three times, and falling was legitimately the funnest part. Then I took a break to swim and enjoy the water. The next time I paddle-boarded I didn't fall at all and it was kinda boring. Should've tried more reckless stuff.

After I went back to the cabin, taking one of the veggie box lunches. Took an hour nap, as the sun took a lot out of me. Not entirely refreshed, I went back to Northstar and hung out until it was time to buy some QUAKECON tickets. Tickets were gained successfully.

Then it was dinner and board games until I head back to the cabin to sleep.

During downtime or walk time or time alone, I either was ruminating about random things or listening to the 7 Habits.

Last month, I spent the morning with extended family, then drove to Chicago with my cousin. He has a VR setup, so I played some Super Hot and a VR rhythm game where you sliced to the beat. Both were super cool. We also saw Solo near his place (decent movie).

Fri Jun 29 06:10:02 UTC 2018

Last week, I don't have much to say. Timer progress started again, but a bunch of stuff has made it so I'm not working on it everyday. Like, skipped one day, and then I have this Tahoe trip where I won't do any such work until I get back home on Saturday.

It's interesting to note how much my daily checklist has updated in just a week. Lots of little iterations.

Fri Jun 29 06:13:08 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I reacted badly to political news. And today I'm better, but I think I need to work on ending my contact with twitter like I ended it with reddit.

It's bad for me. Full stop.

But, because this is a little work vacation, let's do a play-by-play of the day instead of any thinking. Think can come, mind you, as I did a lot of things worth ruminating on today.

So, I woke up, and made myself some waffles. I started off counting calories in my diary, but as the day went on I decided that it was not tenable. I was going to estimate so many numbers, and I wasn't going to use that data in any way, it was not valuable.

Anyways, I made waffles, and I packed, and I walked to the light rail to take it to the airport. I meet up with people, we fly, we land, we get on a bus to Tahoe. I have a drink. I have another.

We arrive at Tahoe, I go to orientation, I walk to my cabin. I browse Twitter.

There is no reason to browse Twitter. It is not keeping me informed. It is not motivating me. It is not updating or iterating my philosophy. Twitter is garbage time better spent being inside my own head.

I finally tear myself away and nap. The nap clears me of my negative emotions and I go wandering. A couple people comment on me looking really happy. "All I've done so far is take a nap."

I hang out with a person from the London office. He's cool. Name is Lanrun or something like that.

We go to the place where there'll be food. There's a fireside Q&A with the CEO. I end up asking a question. We take a group photo, we eat. I go back and hang out with the same people.

I have a long discussion about politics. And at some point I'll reiterate my thinking here. But not now. It was a fun talk. I drink some whiskey.

We walk to karaoke. The place is packed and loud. I stay for all of 30 seconds and nope my way out. I walk back to my cabin.

I brush my teeth. I floss. The plan is to do my end of day review. I browse twitter (bad). Then youtube (better). Then start my pomodoro and do this end of day review.

And now I'm going to wind down with some youtube and then sleep.

Expect just a review tomorrow, as well. With another play-by-play.

A month ago, I was in Indiana with family. I was also on call. Did some solid hanging out with family, including my cousin Elizabeth, her husband, daughter, and son.

The beginning of me coding my own web timer began this day with me adding a pomodoro button to my old timer (the one I still use).

I have drawings from this day in my notebook that I should get around to digitizing. Drawings by me of the cousins once removed, and drawings by the girl of me and of her dad.

I have lots of drawings to digitize.

Thu Jun 28 04:17:24 UTC 2018

It was my birthday a week ago. To celebrate, the wife and I finished season 3 of Rick and Morty.

Thu Jun 28 04:18:35 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I had a productive work-from-home day. And I gave the history of my little card that reminds me to think of those who're gone. Everytime I come across it going forward, I'll try to tell a different story, I think.

Thu Jun 28 04:20:27 UTC 2018

Today....

Well, my pomodoros today after this one will be 3 total. That's my planning this morning, one at work, and this end of day review.

It wasn't going to be a productive day anyways, there's a work retreat tomorrow, and a code freeze today, and it was a distracting environment at work. Which is fine. Not everyday needs to be productive.

But.... Justice Kennedy is retiring. This is terrible. Every bit of government is going to have a "conservative" skew for a good while. Democrats should take the house in the midterms, but even that's not guaranteed. The senate is decently unlikely.

And Democrats overall continue to just be the "not outright evil" choice. So many in the party are trying to be Republican lite. Or rather, I guess, real conservative instead of what the word really means now (racist).

Emotionally, I regressed a bit at this news. I ended up going to twitter and reading various things there. Still no reddit. Reddit is gone. Twitter I no longer have an account, so it's limited there. No getting into pointless arguments. If I want to do something, I do something real or I do it here where my words will actually have a positive effect on someone (aka me).

I eventually talked about this news with my wife, and regained energy to cook and stuff. I ended up overeating, but again I have kept sugar out of the equation. I overate on homecooked, protein-rich, basically "healthy" food.

Thu Jun 28 04:28:24 UTC 2018

Today, after climbing, I weighed in at 209.8 pounds. I'm probably like 215 right now with the overeating, and the number isn't that important because it's water weight, but it feels good. I'm getting good feedback on my calorie counting. WIll continue it until I'm below 190, I think. 185 is a good goal.

Thu Jun 28 04:29:42 UTC 2018

Out of time. Some quick links to good stuff I've watched:

Also, I am in the part of the 7 Habits where he talks about "Win-Win or No Deal". A good section, I think. The most powerful part being when even if you're on the win-lose side, if you know the other is losing, you agree to no deal because win-win is what we should strive for. That's some Prisoner's Dilemma stuff right there, but in a scenario not often talked about when talking about that dilemma (agree-to-disagree isn't a part of the dilemma, after all).

Thu Jun 28 04:33:55 UTC 2018

Anyways, I feel gross. So shower and then bed.
