I have started a pomodoro, but am unsure what I want to do during this pomodoro.

I had planned timer remake time, but I had said that I'll start personal project stuff with a focus on IGDA work.

Which actually reminds me, there's a bunch of stuff not on this new computer that I need for IGDA. It's a good time to start transfering stuff over and/or redownload some things.

Welp, this is becoming an IGDA pomodoro.

Yesterday, I jumped right back into work and shipped 3 PRs. Today, I was told I got things done super fast and was asked to start working on something completely different.

Thu Aug 16 03:46:44 UTC 2018

Today was a half-day at work because there was an Seattle office offsite. Even so, I still wanted to make my 8 minimum. I ended up getting 5. Might be hard to get that 40 pomodoro count by end of Friday, but I still think it's a good goal.

Because of the foreseen half-day, I skipped climbing. Will climb every other day starting tomorrow until I'm back to a Monday/Wednesday/Friday schedule.

Started on IGDA Student SIG stuff today. I'll be back to 1 hour Tuesday/Thursday, and 2 hours Saturday on that. School will be back in session in a lot of places soon, gots to process that properly.

I'd like to get back to my timer and get it MVP as soon as possible and abandon it in favor of my Japanese learning tool by October.

A while back, I brought my copy of Code Complete into work. Today, I found myself grabbing for it to illustrate how I was understanding a peer of mine over concerns about our codebase and what we should do about it.

It was surprisingly easy to find the specific illustrations I was looking for in the 1000 page book. I feel like maybe I should reread those sections where I found the illustrations.

No specific reading done today. I have redisabled the browser on my phone and am trying to get above 1000 imaginary currency in my site-blocker extension.

I put in headphones lately only to signal that I'm doing work and/or to listen to when my pomodoros end. No listening.

I was going to do a weekly review, but that doesn't make too much sense as I skipped the diary the whole week whilst at QUAKECON! The plan instead will be to backlog each missing day a week later to the best of my ability.

I can return to the weekly review this Saturday (upon failing to stay consistent with weekly review on Monday, and deciding that Sunday is a bare-minimum pomodoro-day).

August 10th, 2017: I live in Seattle and have Internet.

August 12th, 2017: I went to the Seattle Indies meetup for the first time.

August 14th, 2017: "I am a real adult again."

Today is my first year anniversary at Mixpanel.

Wed Aug 15 03:46:15 UTC 2018

A month ago, I discussed a lack of progress in improving my work pomodoros. I'm in a solid place now, though. 8 pomodoros minimum per working day since the shock.

Hoping for an average of 10 this week (to make my weekly number 40 even with having Monday off).

Wed Aug 15 03:47:45 UTC 2018

A week ago was my last entry in this diary. I was given solid feedback at work that I was properly transitioning into a badass. I also packed for QUAKECON.

Tomorrow, I'll recall as best I can last Wednesday. There was a rhythm to the days there, and also specific, timed events that'll anchor me. Even so, I'll forget things, and mix some things up.

That's fine, I just want to have a diary post each day this year.

Wed Aug 15 03:49:39 UTC 2018

Yesterday will be elaborated upon next Monday, I think. Though maybe come Saturday I'll finish backlogging all the days.

Wed Aug 15 03:50:09 UTC 2018

Work was solid today. Even with 2 hours of meetings, I got 8 pomodoros in (which is now my minimum number). I'm hoping to get 8 in tomorrow, and then 12 in Thursday/Friday. Why only 8 tomorrow? EPD offsite fun times.

I hope to be back to climbing tomorrow morning.

Personal projects should start again soon. First off I'll be jumping back into IGDA stuffs.

I woke up around 0800 and had some leftovers for breakfast. I then watched YouTube on my phone until other people wanted to hang out. I got as much packing as I could without the wife done. Then I went to the restaurant everyone else was having breakfast.

Shortly after arriving there, I noted that I wasn't done packing. "You know that checkout is at 11, right?" It was 1050. I did not know. I ran to the front desk and made sure that a slightly late checkout was all right (it was, my card would just stop working at 1100). I then went to the hotel and woke up my wife.

We packed in a half hour, and then hung out with another friend in the lobby.

At 1230, we lyfted to the airport, and then the wife and I got some vegan food after getting through TSA. Our flight was delayed, but not significantly. We arrived home around 1700. I unpacked and setup my computer. I also did some laundry.

I fell asleep around 2400.

Today was the last day of QUAKECON. The BYOC area shut down at 1700. I played PUBG and Quake Champions. I cooked sandwiches, potatoes and tofu, and heated up some waffles.

I watched the Quake Champions duel tournament to its finale. After collecting all my stuff into my hotel room, I watched a bit of the first Predator movie, and then watched a terrible Charlie Sheen movie where he plays an undercover cop in a motorcycle gang. Lots of fun ripping into the movie whilst we watched.

Afterwards, we watched the first episode of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show (which was terrible).

Fun times.

Nothing really significant happened today. Just lots of gaming and some minor explorations. Sandwich for "breakfast" at noon, chilli pasta for "lunch" at 1800, and waffles for "dinner" around 2200.

My cousin left Quakecon early to prerpare for a week of friends at his place playing the new WoW expansion. Went from one BYOC to his own.

Played:

  • PUBG
  • Quake Champions
  • Reflex Arena

Did some Internet browsing as well.

That is all.

Fri Aug 17 04:21:13 UTC 2018

At 1000 I waited in line for the QUAKECON keynote. Hung out with random BYOC neighbor darkchille. He destroyed me at Mario Kart (I brought my Switch while waiting in line).

The keynote was pretty fun. They showed off Doom Eternal which reminded me of my first QUAKECON experience (where they showed off DOOM 4). There weren't free shirts for everyone who showed up to the keynote which was disappointing.

Afterwards, I went and cooked some more sandwiches like the day before, and then waited in line to buy some QUAKECON hoodies (because it's cold in the BYOC area and I needed some swag to bring home this year that the keynote did not provide).

I downloaded and played some Quake Champions before cooking some tofu and tamales, and then waiting in line for Master Pancake.

Master Pancake was great. There was much drinking. I drank maybe too much, but didn't get sick. They riffed on the Mortal Kombat movie. They asked for a volunteer with martial-arts experience, so I went up and showed off my favorite move. I wasn't picked to be a part of the intermission show. A way more badass person was, and he did an excellent job.

The phrase this year was "Ron Swanson", because one of the guest comedians "looked like a discount Ron Swanson" and thus that was the fan phrase that won the drinking contest phrase.

The phrase was to be shouted, and drinks to be had, every time Shang Tsung pointed, said "Flawless victory", said "Your soul is mine", or spit. There was lots of shouting and drinks to be had.

After Master Pancake, I went and ate some waffles before exploring the BYOC area. Exploring the BYOC area while drunk is also something I did my first BYOC (after I ran away from friends who tried to take me to my hotel room). This time, I didn't make it awkward for anyone, and it was fun seeing people play random games.

I ended up having a drunk conversation with Harley, the person usually picked as the volunteer in Master Pancake because he's just awesome. I used to think he was secretly part of their group, but after last year's bad intermission show, I don't believe it anymore.

I played Quake Champions, PUBG, and then Super Smash Bros. Melee until about 3 a.m. before going to bed. The last two hours was SSBM with my cousin, who I knew was leaving the next day and I wanted to get some quality time with him. We ended up making a competition out of who would get the most successful Ken combos.

I won that competition.

My rental monitor wasn't ready until noon. The wife's rental equipment was ready at 10, but the wife had to wait in the regular line to get her badge.

We cheated the system by having her get a general attendence badge and I checked out her rental equipment and put it in her spot. At the end of the day when the line was short we got her badge. Everything worked out.

Setting up my computer ended up being a bit frustrating as I realized I had used the wrong screws to secure my power supply unit, and they had popped out, and I had to use some of the good screws keeping my case together to resecure the PSU. Luckily, that worked out great (NOTE: when I arrived home, I found the right screws and my case is properly screwed together now).

We made vegan sandwiches on the cast iron using the hot plate for brunch (first meal of the day at noonish). It was really good. Tofurky deli slices, vegan chao cheese, and avocado on Dave's killer plant seed bread.

I played a tiny amount of Overwatch, some PUBG... and tried out Monster Hunter World. Ended up not being a fan and requesting a refund.

Ended up being no real events on Thursday. The general con area wasn't even open. There was a huge line for a soda shop setup inside the BYOC selling QUAKECON mugs for $30. I got one. It's awesome. Came with free refills that day, and $5 unlimited refills for the day each following day.

Had some diet rootbeer. Avoided the sugary drinks. (NOTE: The following day I found they had unsweetened iced tea. It was delicious.)

(NOTE: It is now my work mug. Worth the $30.)

For dinner I made chilli pasta and for second dinner I heated up some waffles. Lots of use out of the hot plate.

This post is missing sleep questions and the like because I'm filling it in a week later.

I had trouble staying asleep. I guess I'm so used to early morning flights for travel that my body assumed I was having one again (even though the flight was at 10). I woke up around 0330, and finally got out of bed around 0530.

I decided to make waffles for the trip to QUAKECON. Whilst making waffles, I did 1.5 hours of non-pomodoroized work. My reasoning was it didn't count as real work if I didn't do it in a pomodoro. I ended up mostly finishing a task I had wanted to finish in the week.

Then, I finished packing, and the wife and I took a Lyft to the airport. At the airport, we got some coffee and some hummus sandwiches. On the plane, I did a sudoku puzzle in my head, and listened to some Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

On landing, we dropped our stuff off at the hotel and went to a place called Tommy Tamales. They had trouble with our order and gave us a full refund and extra food. Great customer service, great food. Will go again next year. After tamales, we went grocery shopping at a nearby Walmart, we got:

  • Tofurky deli slices
  • Meatless meat balls
  • Dave's killer bread
  • Earth balance vegan butter
  • Potatoes
  • Tofu
  • Rice pasta
  • Chilli

We get to the hotel, we eat half our tamales (the other half is frozen and will be eaten with tofu at a later date). I go wait in line to bring my computer to the BYOC area.

I fall asleep in line, there's a photo.

I have to wait until the next day to get the rental equipment.

Solid first day.

Last year, again there is no post, but I moved into a studio apartment with my wife in Seattle. I had some help moving from a friend. I also went to IKEA, Costco, and various other places to get furniture and kitchen equipment.

Last month, I noted how the previous month I was excited that everything was coming together, and in contrast I was excited that things are restabilizing. To keep this monthly chain going, I'm excited to kick my system into MAX POWER.

Last week, I got word that I needed to get more work done at work. It was accurate, I think, and I've stepped it up already. Feeling pretty good about it. Sad I needed the forcing function, but glad that the outcome so far seems rather positive.

There was no post last year, but I remember what I did, because it was the day before I moved to Seattle. I woke up in Salt Lake City, where the wife and I had stopped by during our moving trip from Pittsboro, Indiana to Seattle. We have friends who live in the area.

We left around noon and did a 10 hour drive to Vancouver, WA, where we had another set of friends to stay with.

It was a solid day.

Today, I got word that my work productity is looking good, and if I stabilize here it'd be solid. I hope to make some more progress on productivity, but was really happy to hear that. I also managed to hit my minimum pomodoro amount at work today (8) even with distractions and working without remembering to reset pomodoro.

Oh, speaking of pomodoros, look at what my mentee got me, Stephan:

I tried it once at work and it felt like it could be too distracting, but at home I think it's perfect because I often don't want to wear my headphones. I'll still do the online one, so that I log it automagically, but this is cool.

It's at 0 because it's time to stop.

Skipped climbing today due to last day of OpsLead. Will go tomorrow morning (especially since travel will prevent me from going Wednesday).

No personal projects until after Quakecon.
