Daily Entry: July 25th, 2018

Wed Jul 25 16:35:43 UTC 2018

I'm not going to backlog Sunday through Tuesday. I was sick. I tried playing Overwatch all day Sunday to feel better. Didn't work. Monday and Tuesday I rested and binge watched some shows. I'm still sleeping too much but I don't think another rest day (feels like a lazy day) will do me any good.

I'm going to try my best to restabilize my sleep schedule and get back to the routine I've started.

Published the following Sunday: today is the day I gave up on trying to get over being sick whilst being active. I decided to watch season 1 of the new Ducktales show.

This will be the second post of the year where I didn't even go back and timeblock.

Dream

I was in a class room, but I understood it to be a Mixpanel office. We were forming groups to decide what project to work on. My mentor from Rincon was behind me.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him.

"New rules at Rincon. Only allowed to make certain variables in code. Made job real difficult. Taking a break to help you out."

I looked at my watch. 13:05. I was surprised. "It's already one!" My mentor looked as well. He didn't say what he read, but I knew he read a different number, I assumed he misread my watch upside down. "I should go find some lunch."

I walked down a hall and found myself in another classroom that was serving food. It was mac and cheese. Not vegan. I noticed some avocados and decided to eat that. Then, I decided to explore.

There's a vague memory of me being at a busy crossroad between the lunchroom and me being in the recess area of an elementary school. "It's already dark?" I asked at the night time. I looked at my watch: 18:00. "How's that possible? How did time move so quickly?" I checked to see if somehow I went back in time, but it was still the 19th (dream me knew remembered the date, interestingly enough).

There seemed to be some sort of event happening at the school. A man was standing at a booth outside the cafetaria. He had... baby badgers available. For what, I didn't ask. There was a puppy standing guard, making sure the baby badgers didn't escape.

I went inside the cafeteria. There was some sort of market setup inside. Various strange things were for sale, but I found myself not interested because none of it was vegan. I decided to further explore the school.

Down one hall, I ran into what I recognized as the principle of the school. "Principal X," I recall calling him by name, but do not remember the name I assigned him.

"Yes?"

"I didn't realize you still worked here. Remember me? Rory Ksionda?" He started to answer that he did not, but I cut him off. "It makes sense you don't. You've come across a million kids since me, I'm sure.

It was a lounge area. There were a group of moms talking on a couch about random things. One specific thing I remember, "Can you believe they think arming everybody is a good idea? Like that will solve the gun problem? Ridiculous." Politics even in my dream.

I realized I wasn't wearing shoes. "When did I lose my shoes?" I retraced my steps and found my shoes in the hall I had met with my imaginary old principle. There was talking from an office, so I peaked my head in.

"Rory?" said a woman seated near a computer. I recongized her as my old kindergarden teacher (note: my real kindergarden teacher was male).

"Oh, hey," I told her, "Glad to see you remember me."

"Hard to forget," she said. "I even have your old school diary." She went and got a book and opened to a page where I wrote about principle X. "You had the strangest imaginary friend."

....

The realization sunk in my stomach. Principle X wasn't real. "I just saw him just now." The teachers looked at each other. I wandered away, sensing danger.

At this point I had a flashback. I remembered my friend's brother. Except thinking on it, I realized my friend's brother wasn't real. I found myself back in the lounge area, alone. I now had a puppy companion.

"Are you all right?" a woman asked me.

"I don't know what's real!" I yelled at her. She smiled at me. "You're not real.... This dog isn't real." My friend's brother appeared. "I need mental help."

I began looking for a phone. I saw one on the armrest of a couch. "Why would a phone be there? That phone isn't real." The woman, the dog, and the brother were trying to distract me whilst I looked. I found a phone next to a sink and decided that one could be real.

I dialed 911. The phone twisted and cracked, breaking in my hand. I assumed it was a trick. The sink turned on, spraying me all over. "Hello! Hello! I'm goinginsane! I need mental help. Come to my location. I am seeing things that aren't real and maybe not seeing things that are. Send help. Send help."

And that was the end of my dream.

Last year, I found out my start date at Mixpanel. I noted I was excited to start building a good work-life balance.

Fri Jul 20 19:38:37 UTC 2018

Last month was my 28th birthday. I watched season 3 of Rick and Morty to celebrate.

Fri Jul 20 19:41:00 UTC 2018

Last week was a work from Tucson day. I got solid work in and hung out with some Tucson friends.

Fri Jul 20 19:42:04 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I thought I was at the end of my being sick. I felt well enough by the end of the work day to run home. I think that was a mistake, as today I now feel a bit worse. The walk to work was significantly more uncomfortable, and my head feels warm (though I took my temperature and do not have a fever).

I'll see how I feel and maybe leave work early today.

Work was hard today. Didn't mangage to accomplish anything. Got some pomodoros in, have an idea of what I need to do Monday.

Skipped climbing this whole week. Just think it's not smart whilst feeling this way.

Decided to play a ton of Overwatch today instead of personal projects.

Listening: no Cortex today, actually. Listened to some YouTube videos during pomodoros (definitely didn't work).

Finished review super early and don't want to force the pomodoro. Interrupting it.

Time to do a quick plan for tomorrow.

It ended up with weird plant parasites that looked like dreadlocks of hair attached to my belly and chest, and I had to rip them off painfully.

Expecting a very important call today. Woo.

Thu Jul 19 18:56:45 UTC 2018

Last month was a SF workday where I travelled back to Seattle at the end of the day.

I think I've continued to make progress on using my system in different environments from this day.

Fri Jul 20 02:08:23 UTC 2018

It's time to explore panel a bit.

Fri Jul 20 02:34:45 UTC 2018

Exploration was good. Need to decide what I'm trying to go for, make a plan to get to a proof-of-concept, and then recontextualize what I've learned into a working YouTube alarm.

Fri Jul 20 02:35:47 UTC 2018

But I'm starting to dislike my habit of pushing my end of day review until after time with wife, so I'm going to do it now instead.

Fri Jul 20 02:56:56 UTC 2018

Last week, I flew to Phoenix and drove to Tucson. I was super happy with my travel productivity (put in a solid workday).

Fri Jul 20 02:58:02 UTC 2018

Yesterday was a solid day of work even though I was sick. I ended up running out of energy whilst cooking, and made the intelligent decision to watch a movie with the wife instead of the plan as it was.

Fri Jul 20 02:59:08 UTC 2018

I deployed a thing at work today. I have more work to do on thing. I'm not being specific because I spent way too much time reorganizing YNAB. I just went and played with it some more. Playing is a good sign, but I'm already out of time and have to answer my daily review questions.

I'm feeling well enough today that I'm hoping to go climbing tomorrow morning, but I won't force it. I'll see how I feel when I wake up.

I think I know the way forward for my timer remake. Should be getting to MVP real soon. Then I'll want to redo some of the poor initial work I did, and then I'll want to polish and think about how I want to design it.

Listening today:

  • Cortex

I should start listening to Cortex on YouTube so I can properly remember which episodes. I'm listening to vastly different episodes at work and at home. Maybe I should just relisten from the beginning, as well.

Watching today....

Nothing yet. That's pretty cool. Will watch something after Overwatch, probably.

But speaking of... time to play.

I dreamt that I was visiting some unnamed city. The group I was with included my wife, my aunt, and some people who do not exist. We were eating treast, including but not limited to rice krispies.

A person we didn't know came up to us and asked for food. She was dirty and wearing slightly tatered clothes. One of the people we were with broke off bits of rice crispy and literally threw the food in an arc at the person.

"Thank you," said the woman as she caught the first bit of food. The second bit of food veered way off and fell down the cliff beyond a hand rail. "That was mean."

"It was an accident," said the thrower.

"Mahjong!" came a voice from the other side of the rail. There wasn't a pit anymore, it was a train rail area, and on the other side of it was a group of people hanging out. One was a different woman holding a board game.

The woman on this side started speaking a different language, and pulled out a... chess board for some reason. The pieces were setup incorrectly on the board and they were screaming moves to each other. Playing some game that wasn't chess, and wasn't mahjong.

But it was time to get on the train... to get to a different train.

We almost missed the first train, but caught the second half of it. There was immediately a long line on the train to get into the bathroom. Someone in the line was drinking clear liquid. He stopped halfway through the glass and asked, "Is this water?"

"It's vodka," said someone else as he finished drinking the glass.

"I'm going to be sick," he said, as he rushed to the front of the line for the bathroom. It was at this point I noticed his hair looked like an upside-down boot. As I realized this, it took on a more solid form of a boot.

"Food is ready," came a voice from behind. I turned around and there was a whole cart of food. I inspected it for low-sugar, vegan goods. Which is interesting. Seems the subconscious is in full agreement with my diet. Though I was eating a rice krispy treat earlier? Minor inconsistency.

At this point, there was a police raid on a train. The captain being the dirty woman from earlier. Some criminal was caught on the train, and the food needed to be taked as evidence. But I had found some curry and rice I wanted to eat.

"No!" I screamed as I tried to grab some food before it was taken away. I was tazed. "Worth it," I thought as I shoveled food into my face whilst still being tazed. That was the end of the dream.

Last month was a Lexicon++ kickoff in SF. Meaning I've been on my current project for a month. Not moving fast enough.

Last week was a WFH day. Solid day. This was the day before my flight to Tucson.

Wed Jul 18 19:08:55 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I started noticing that I'm feeling a bit ill. Today it's becoming more clear that I am ill. It may be this chronic illness I seem to get regularly. So, I'm going to tag today and yesterday with it. I can maybe go back and find the other days where I had this illness, but that might be hard.

My goal is, going forward, I'll note each time I feel sick for multiple days where I don't get my wife sick (aka I'm not contagious) as this chronic illness, and then I have data to give a doctor when I next see a doctor.

But in any case, my systems are keeping me productive in this state! I'm losing a bunch of time, though, due to extra sleep needs. I'm going to see if I can get a good number of pomodoros even though I came in late today, and plan to leave today at the same time (as is important to avoid a vicious cycle that'll hurt my sleep).

Let's see if I can get a pomodoro every half-hour until I leave (except for the nap).

Thu Jul 19 18:17:30 UTC 2018

Today was a super solid work-day. In spite of me showing up pretty late and doing my planning at work. I made a goal of a pomodoro every half-hour and mostly made that goal. I ended up not doing the final pomodoro and doing some ping pong instead.

This is super exciting for several reasons. One, yesterday was almost a sick day. I did not have energy, and in fact I was super tired by the time I got home due to my being ill. I had that thing where I overheated really easily and everything was more tiring. Also, a slight stomach ache. This is a sickness that happens pretty regularly. And I've never been productive when sick like this.

Until today. And not only was I productive, I was as productive as usual in less time. Which just tells me I need to step up my game.

Which is absolutely the goal.

I also finally am going to deploy tomorrow something I've been working on for a month, and I can't wait to start a cycle of:

  • Customer feedback
  • Give something to customer
  • Customer feedback
  • Give something to customer
  • Etc.

It is going to be a big priority moving forward.

I decided to sleep in and skip climbing because of my feeling ill. I don't want to hurt myself. I ended up doing plenty of pull-ups at work, as well as walking to work and walking home instead of running. A good compromise, and also a good means of gauging how sick I feel.

I'm really hoping to be back to climbing by Friday, but will be okay with myself if I put it off until Monday.

I watched the first Harry Potter instead of working on personal projects. I had no energy after I did some basic cleaning and cooking in the kitchen. I think this was the correct choice.

My system is proving to be quite valuable when I'm in a non-ideal state. And I'm showing that I'm quite capable of adapting when necessary. For instance, doing these end-of-day reviews the next day works... for the most part, and is a good way of dealing with running out of energy.

I'm bought into the system enough to not let myself fall too far behind.

Last year, I had a kinda post-mortem for the GMTK game jam. Wanted to start to do an hour of game stuff everyday. Not a bad plan, but I didn't have the systems in place to actually accomplish it.

Tue Jul 17 18:23:37 UTC 2018

Last month, I made a note of slight weight gain. It's fun to note that I'm getting close to 210. Should be below 210 by August.

Tue Jul 17 18:25:50 UTC 2018

Last week, I fought with myself a bit on what my timer goals are. Which boiled down to: learning how to do things "right" and being pretty slow or rushing to something functional and making it better later.

I think, at work, rushing to something functional is good, because I have outside pressure to fix what is bad. But with personal projects, without people to look at my work, I should in fact focus on what I think is the right way and work on doing work that way quickly. So I'm glad I made the decision I did a week ago.

I have done a good job of avoiding Twitter, lately.

Tue Jul 17 18:29:19 UTC 2018

Yesterday was my first full day in Seattle in a while. I have some recovery I need to do from shocks to my sleep because of travel. But productivity has been solid considering that. Usually a day like yesterday results in nothing, instead of pretty close to a normal day.

Going to take a while before YNAB stuff stabilizes into stuff to properly analyze. For now I'm still capturing all spending, so I'm doing what I should there. Looks like spending for the month is around $4k.

I think? I'm not sure how credit card spending stuff works, exactly. I'll figure it out.

Oh, wait, looking at the reports. I'll need to reorganize where my spending is to really see where money is going.

Something to consider doing next weekly review.

Wed Jul 18 04:24:00 UTC 2018

Got a solid 7 pomodoros at work, though two of those were backlog and planning. I woke up late this morning, and so only processed tickler and headed straight to work. Definitely not a habit to build.

Ended up not doing IGDA Admin and working on personal project again. I have search "working", and now need to load the YouTube video. Which means it's time to understand panel better.

Really, it's time to understand it better to better understand how I should rearrange things and share state between DOM components.

Whilst walking home today... I passed a woman walking the other way. She had a stagger to her walk and a green wig poorly concealing her black hair. As I got closer, I realized that her flesh-colored pants were just a lack of pants. I got proper confirmation as she turned away from me towards a store and yelled hello loudly inside.

Strange experience.

Reading today:

I actually read that last one yesterday, but remembered that I read it today, so I'm going to list it today.
