Last week, I was feeling the apathy pretty hard, but I knew to fight it. I overcame it, partially thanks to some pressure from work, and am in a good spot now (though I understand the irony of saying that during a backlog review).

I may keep the personal weekly reviews on Monday.... I'm liking the idea of minimizing Sundays.

Thought about climbing today, but OpsLead has been paging me consistently and I would rather nothing escalate to my secondary, so I decided against it. In the future, I'm thinking about focusing on easy tasks on weekends, and then getting my stretching in afterwards (because the stretching is what helps me sleep, I think).

Interestly enough, my abs are sore from climbing yesterday. Which is neat. I should focus on the problems I was trying yesterday to get more ab workouts in (cave/cliff climbing).

I'm super enjoying my newly built computer. It's quiet, it can handle PUBG (which my last one couldn't really), and I'm enjoying some high framerate gaming. I consider this prep for QUAKECON next week.

Personal projects can resume when I get back.

Last month, I went to Vancouver, WA to see a friend for his 75th birthday on the 4th.

Last week, I noted how glad I was to have started YNAB.

Yesterday, I correctly estimated that I could do a few small PRs today after laying foundation with a couple massive PRs.

Today, I worked from home (as was the plan). I managed to sneak in some climbing with some permission from my OpsLead secondary. I updated my Mixpanel pomodoro tracking to note the difference between work pomodoros and personal ones (based on computer OS the pomodoro came from). I managed 11 work pomodoros today, and got 3 PRs pushed.

I've started a weekly review with work, as well, but right now I'm just figuring out what data I want to collect about the week. I collected pomoodoros, PRs, and slack activity. I'll discuss with my boss what's useful and what isn't.

I snuck in climbing today! The difficulty setup the climb gym I go to (SBP) is:

  • Grey (VB or V0)
  • Yellow (V0 or V1)
  • Green (V1 or V2)
  • Red (V2 or V3)
  • Blue (V3 or V4)
  • Orange (V4 or V5)
  • Purple (V5 or V6)
  • Black (V6 or V7)

I can do all grey's, most yellow's, half of green's (maybe), and very few red's. I have not accomplished anything above red. Today, I accomplished two reds (and almost a third one). Feels good.

I made sure to stretch after returning from climbing.

My personal project today was build computer, and I am not writing this review on that computer. I love the machine. It's quiet, it's fast, it's small. It's great.

It also took 9 pomodoros to build.

Yesterday was a work-focus day (though I did set up my new monitor). After the initial stress has worn off, I'm liking it, a bit. Definitely not long-term, but it's good sort of boot camp to train good habits.

I've been getting my code into a solid place to do quick, small PRs. Unfortunately, there's a lot of things to address and reviewers of my code keep finding valid things to poke at. I'm deploying a massive PR today, but tomorrow it should be a couple small ones.

I went to go climbing this morning, but then I got a page, and I didn't have data for some reason. I'm hoping to try again tomorrow.

Personal projects still on pause. Especially whilst I have a QUAKECON computer to build.

I think that an important part of sleep stability is stretching. I have been bad about it, but I made sure to do it the past couple days and sleep has been better.

No reading today.

Yesterday, I was basically told at work that I'm not doing enough work. I'm taking it as an opportunity, but most of my thinking has been logged outside of a public view. Everyone told me I've been taking it well, but really, I've been craving this kind of interaction, I think. One of the reasons I left Rincon is the disconnect between feeling I could/should be doing more and not getting that feedback at work.

So, this will be stressful, for sure, but it's also exciting in its own way. A forcing function to get better.

Planning and reviews have been super hard lately. I started singing a song whilst doing the bare minimum today:

Everything is harder when you're lazy.

Nothing is what you would rather do.

The slightest bit of work will make you crazy.

Seriously it's hard I'm telling you.

I actually don't remember the words that I made up, but it was something like that, but slightly better.

I'm going to go with the bare minimum of timeblock everyday until I snap out of this, though. I'm sad to miss some past posts and whatever I'd gain from reading them, but I'm sadder to see not posting at all like I did last Sunday thru Tuesday. Those were the first days I missed in almost a year, Stephan. I didn't even backlog them, and now it's too late, I think. I'm going to accept that decision I made.

Though, of note: Sunday I played Overwatch all day, Monday I watched the new Ducktales show, and Tuesday I watched season 3 of Star vs the Forces of Evil.

I'll try to read through all the posts I didn't review once I've recovered my energy.

Screw it, I'm going to backlog those days now. It'll be the first days in a while where I didn't timeblock, but that's more acceptable.

What I should do, is sort it into:

  • Electronics garbage
  • Garbage-garbage
  • Things to get rid of (but not throw away)
  • Things that don't have a place to be put away properly

And then put the rest away properly.

Now with a bunch of stuff off my desk... it clearly really needs to be dusted. I'll do that tomorrow morning when cleaning my computer.

Now... maybe there's some emotional organization to be had. I seem to have lost my mojo as far as planning first thing in the morning and doing an end-of-day review. I also haven't worked on side projects consistently at all.

Is it all me recovering from being sick? Am I in a state that needs rest right now, regardless of having been sick. Is it time to recover? To take a break from work, maybe a break from lots of things and just sit and think?

I've been having good experience lately just sitting and thinking. Perhaps it's time to delve into meditation again?

I would, however, still like to do my planning and reviews. And weekly reviews. It isn't that much time and it really helps me calibrate myself.

I think reminding myself of why something is valuable is a necessary part of my system.

YNAB was a good idea, Stephan. I should've gotten into it sooner, but maybe I wasn't ready sooner. I'm glad I started when I did, though, as I did a trip to Tucson this month, and will be doing QUAKECON next month. It gave me good insight into how to organize my spending. All Tucson spending went into a "Tucson Travel" category group. Food spending in Tucson is a different beast than food spending at home in Seattle. It also gives me a good idea of how much trips to Tucson cost, which is important as I'll be doing more travel in the future.

QuakeCon is a yearly thing. Last year I did various things to reduce expenses, but I didn't track how much I spent, really. This year it'll be a category group, and I'll know exactly how much I spent, and on what categories (hotel, airfare, food, rentals, BYOC, etc).

I can then save per paycheck for it next year, and also save to have it paid for via index fund (aka FI-ify it).

I like YNAB a lot more than Mint. I'm also excited about their public API. Perhaps I'll integrate it into this site at some point.
