Last month, I noted that I hadn't been devoting time to reading or personal projects, but was good about work and exercise. I decided not to judge this and let it stabilize before trying to mutate further. I think that was a good plan, and now I am working on side-projects (and even getting a bit of reading in).

Sun Jun 17 02:09:21 UTC 2018

Reorganized the day. Taking Overwatch out to make room for pomodoros I skipped in the morning. Won't quite make up completely, but that's okay.

Sun Jun 17 03:06:04 UTC 2018

I really want to keep working on my timer, but I have felt the value of doing my daily reviews, and the weekly review is getting more valuable each time I do it (I'm still setting things up as far as that goes).

I won't have time to do both if I don't stop working on the timer now. So... let's do my end of day review.

Sun Jun 17 03:21:14 UTC 2018

Last week, I started actual work on timer 2.0.

I've made a lot of progress in a week, in all fairness. I rarely devoted more than an hour per day to it, and I've been playing with a bunch of stuff behind the scenes. Today, for instance, it looks like no progress has been made, but I'm trying to make an alarm class for both pomodoro tracking and arbitrary YouTube triggers at various points in a countdown.

I'm hoping it'll be exactly what I want, but maybe not? Lots of thinking involved here. Though, in any case, I'm working on my programming capabilities, which is good. I may decide I don't like it, and then I can rewrite it better.

Sun Jun 17 03:28:21 UTC 2018

Yesterday, my timer became functional, and I stated some confidence in being able to plug some stuff in. I maintain that confidence. Once I figure out how I want to do alarms, I think things will flow smoothly.

Which, I may have something now, so from there.... Well, I'll have a good idea of where I am tomorrow.

Empty my head....

I'm pretty excited about my developing side-project habit. I want to practice finishing and polishing alongside working on stuff, so I might be on the timer for a bit, but I'm confident that I'll get better at styling and such as I stick to such things (and also because I'll build a code base from which to reuse certain personal styles).

I like that I'm devoting a chunk of this time to IGDA admin stuff. Which is also a way of saying I'm devoting this time to grunt work. I'm not programming. I'm organizing actions that need to be done (organized via Trello) and getting them done. This is excellent for getting over my distaste for tedious work. Which is also why I want to use Trello more regualarly.

Though, soon I'll be done with IGDA grunt work, and I can actually do some programming there, as well. I have found some bugs in the stuff we already automate, and also further stuff that could be automated.

Also, I've been looking ahead thinking about what my project post-timer will be. I may wish to remake my gamified site-blocker. For two reasons, 1) I think a better means of gaining income in the site-blocker is warrented, and 2) I think it'd be valuable to make a chrome extension in panel and typescript. Further, I'd have use for timer code from my... timer code.

I have some work-related ideas that would benefit from me knowing how to make an extension.

But also... I have an idea for a Japanese learning app which itself could have an extension companion. Though, honestly, the extension would come much later. So....

I'm thinking prioritize the extension first.

Sun Jun 17 03:43:42 UTC 2018

I guess empything my thoughts kinda was a review of my projects (they aren't properly living in Trello yet).

Which means let's move some actions from email to Trello.

Sun Jun 17 03:56:37 UTC 2018

Moved some actions and did some Vanguard stuff (and planned when I'll move T Rowe Price stuff over to Vanguard).

Still got a lot of stuff to process, but I'm slowly making progress.

Going to reorder my weekly checklist so I don't skip so much (as I'll not run out of email actions for a while).

I plan to eventually put some stuff back in daily when it's properly organized, but right now I'm batching it and slowly putting it in a daily-ready state via weekly reviews.

Sun Jun 17 03:58:35 UTC 2018

I might do more of my weekly review tomorrow. I think devoting extra time for a few weekends will really accelerate it getting to a solidly valuable state.

Anyways, time to get ready to wind down.

Last year, I copy-pasted a politics conversation with a friend of mine. I wanted to put more political thinking in my diary. I guess this is a goal that I have let slip. It is a good, goal, however. Something to think about.

Fri Jun 15 14:12:54 UTC 2018

Time for climbing.

Fri Jun 15 18:03:10 UTC 2018

I'm going to try and update my "run" time blocks with how long the run took. Moar data! The run to work itself is 2.3 miles. Meaning I'm managing to run to work at a 7-minute, 42-second pace.

That's pretty good! Typically I'm not running that fast of a pace until I'm closer to 200 pounds.

Sat Jun 16 03:06:34 UTC 2018

I ended up continuing work on my timer remake against my better judgement.

On the bright side: its functional, though not yet as good as my current one.

Soon, though. Stuff should be pretty easy to plug in.

Sat Jun 16 04:12:39 UTC 2018

Last month, I had a nightmare. Also of note (to me) is that I weighed in at 212.8 pounds. I'm not disappointed or anything. I'm not interested in losing weight. I'm interested in being physically capable and healthy, which right now seems to mean being at a steady weight and getting stronger. I'm good with this.

Sat Jun 16 04:14:05 UTC 2018

Last week I was starting to play with typescript in panel. That was only a week ago? That was already a week ago? Somehow I'm feeling both things at once. I've made a lot of progress already, I think. Which is good. In fact, I should be able to replace my old timer sometime next week.

I should play more with inserting code into my posts. Maybe I'll do a post about my timer when it hits MVP.

Sat Jun 16 04:18:17 UTC 2018

Yesterday, the most important thing I talked about was improving my pomodoro-rate at work. Today I managed 2 at work.... Though to be fair it would've been 3 but 1 minute before it ended I needed to go to a meeting.

But 3 isn't good enough either. Though, also, I'm not taking it personally. I just want to be better. I'm still working on the rhythm I need.... I'll tackle it more next week.

Sat Jun 16 04:21:33 UTC 2018

I've noticed that my review of yesterday is usually in comparison to today. Is this a good way to go about this? It seems useful in its own way. In a sense, I'm also comparing the other past posts to today, just not directly. It's more, "Here's this thing I struggled with but am doing well now." or "Here's this thing I completely forgot about."

Or fun things I wrote in the past.

Yeah, I'm good with this.

End of day review over.

Last year, I dicussed my crazy interview schedule. Coast-to-coast over a weekend, yo. Also, apparently I had a dream about someone wanting me to stop writing my diary because it was annoying. Don't remember that at all.

Thu Jun 14 14:02:40 UTC 2018

Last month looks like one of those "hard to focus" days. Lots of aimless meandering. It's cool that I kept the habit of filling in the timeblock on these days. Makes a day without writing possible to review.

Thu Jun 14 14:04:24 UTC 2018

Last week, I found out that typescript as I had it set up can't import jade files as I have them set up. Had to work around that problem. It's pretty cool to see the progress I've had in a week on something I devote an hour per day to.

Lots of good stuff here, including a link to a good previous post.

Thu Jun 14 14:07:51 UTC 2018

Time to run to work.

Fri Jun 15 02:00:24 UTC 2018

Timer has been refactored. Now time to add setting timer capability.

Fri Jun 15 02:40:47 UTC 2018

Whilst making an input component, I realized I don't need so many StateController classes. Regular classes with limited state will serve my purposes fine. I also don't need to be sending very many events... maybe.

Maybe events are fine, actually.

Anyways, this is eating into my end of day review. So let's start that.

Today, I'll have gotten 7 pomodoros in. Which I've discovered isn't bad. A problem, however, is that only 1 will have been achieved at work. This is a recurring problem, though today it may have been unavoidable (a lot of meetings to break my concentration today).

At the same time, throughout the past week or so, I've been relistening to Deep Work by Cal Newport. I've recently gotten to the part about setting aside time for deep work and the various strategies involved.

At home, I have strict times for pomodoros, and thus I do pomodoros during those times. At work... things aren't so properly set. Thus, I need to properly set my pomodoro-rhythm or else I'll get less than I want. If I want, I can try to squeeze extra in at unplanned times, but I think first I should make small, absolute timeblocks where I will do pomodoros. None of this overzealous whole-day of pomodoros plan that I've been doing lately without real success.

My goal is to have a proper rhythm to it by Monday, the 25th. Why that time? I'll be in SF Monday and Tuesday for some all-day meetings next week, and then I'll have the rest of the next week to figure out a proper balance.

I have my goal, I shall spend the next week and a half collecting data and considering how I should mould my environment to meet that goal.

Cutting morning planning short. Have a bus to catch (interrupted pomodoro).

Thu Jun 14 02:05:47 UTC 2018

Just doing a single pomodoro of side project today. Really tired, needed the extra break to just chill with wife.

Still want to maintain habit of working on side project a bit every day, though. So let's do this.

Thu Jun 14 02:24:46 UTC 2018

Bathroom necessities interrupted my pomodoro. :(

In any case, the new timer will now start counting down from 10 seconds when you press start.

Tomorrow afternoon (I'll be getting to work early and leaving work early), I'll refactor code a bit and add a means of actually setting the timer.

After that... YouTube fun begins.

But now it's time for end of day review.

Last year, I was exploring transpiling python to javascript to make it so games made in pygame would run in the browser. There was limited success, but it wasn't good enough to continue.

Thu Jun 14 02:49:31 UTC 2018

Last month, the day belonged to my wife. We made tamales (delicious tamales). Interestingly enough, we may make more tamales this weekend. Maybe we'll do it monthly?

Thu Jun 14 02:54:05 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I got 10 pomodoros in. It was a good day, but I still kept doing work past pomodoros.

Which, if I don't stop now, I'll also do. So tomorrow I'll talk about making stricter times for when I'm doing pomodoros (because I'm good at consistent pomodoros at home but not at work and the difference is the strict timing of pomodoros).

Last year, I was noting my inconsistent use my diary (we're very consistent now, past me!), and planning to add javascript compiling to my pygame setup (didn't work... really, wasn't worth the trouble).

Tue Jun 12 14:02:49 UTC 2018

Last month was a Saturday where I planned on doing diary thinking but ended up gaming all day before watching Steven Universe at a friend's. After this day, I figured I had some sort of emotional block to get over because I wasn't working on side projects even though I felt like I wanted to. Another instance of progress compared to past me.

Tue Jun 12 14:04:53 UTC 2018

All right, so let's try and continue to make progress on things past me tries but fails to do. Yesterday, I noted that I now keep working past pomodoros. Work that isn't conversation with peers must 100% be in a pomodoro today. That's the goal.

Tue Jun 12 14:07:27 UTC 2018

Timer remake time!

Last night, I said some thinking was in order. And this is true. I'm not sure how I want things to communicate with each other. Perhaps custom events? I want the display split to be its own component, I think. It would receive events from the TimerController and update its display.

Tue Jun 12 15:05:41 UTC 2018

I made my display, now I need it to capture events from the timer-controller tick and update itself accordingly.

If this works how I want it to, then it'll make wiring this thing with the various functionality I want pretty straight-forward I think. Just gots to define the right events for things to send and listen to.

Anyways, I think I'm going to make waffle-batter now and walk to work with the batter and the waffle iron.

Lost a personal project pomodoro today due to bad time management.... Let's make the most of this one!

Tue Jun 12 04:15:10 UTC 2018

Okay, so it turns out I'm really bad at stopping things I start. That's good to know! Something to work on. I have the time I set aside and then I have to do the other things. Or, at the very least, update my plan and admit it's another pomodoro of work.

In any case, it's end of day review time:

Timer2 is coming along.

This is showing the timer controller (written in panel and typescript) working. Next I'll update the display component that listens to the timer controller and make it spit out traditional hours, minutes, seconds, milliseconds.

....

Actually, I have some thinking to do.

Last year, I made grand plans for pygame to javascript stuff. Also, I kept working on the Wing IDE and pygame tutorial.

Also, I realized I'm a horrible husband. Kinda burying the lede in my review there.

Somewhat fitting, I'll be playing with that a little bit today.

Sun Jun 10 14:00:48 UTC 2018

Last month, I started watching YouTube while laying in bed to wind down to fall asleep. I have maintained this strategy, and it's been working pretty well.

This is the day before I start reading The 4 Disciplines of Execution.

Yesterday may well have been the most productive Saturday I have had since being in the working world. It tied with my most-productive work-day thus far using this pomodoro system (and that was a pretty productive work-day).

My best pomodoro-day is a long time ago in a previous system, and that one was some 20 pomodoros, I think. I also don't think I'll ever go for that number again. Not particularly healthy to work that much in one day, I believe. I think with growing discipline it may be reasonable to do at most 18 pomodoros, but maybe rarely. I think regularly getting 16 isn't too much to strive for, though.

Things are going well, let's keep this momentum going.

Mon Jun 11 04:31:50 UTC 2018

Today, I started using an app called aTimeLogger. It'll take some getting used to, but this should give me more solid numbers on where my time is going if I can use it with discipline.

We'll see.

Otherwise it was a fun day with the wife. We went to a restaurant and did some cooking. I'm liking filling out the day afterwards. Feels right.

Sat Jun 09 14:00:15 UTC 2018

Last month, I was severely distracted.

Sat Jun 09 14:02:49 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I decided to do an extra work pomodoro instead of going home.

This was a mistake. My weekday schedule is incredibly tight now. Putting off going home means sacrificing some post-work thing, and I don't want to be doing that. The reason I'm not doing enough work during normal work hours is because I'm not getting enough pomodoros in. I can do way more in the time that I'm there. Staying longer one day isn't going to fix a systemic problem. Better to force myself to leave and work on doing better during future work time.

Though, that's not stopping me from doing some work today.

Sat Jun 09 14:06:02 UTC 2018

Timer 2.0 time! I made some notes yesterday about what I want, and so the first thing will be the construction of the timer controller.

Let's do it.

Sat Jun 09 15:01:15 UTC 2018

Got the controller mostly written. Need to verify it, though. I'll do that tomorrow morning, I guess.

IGDA stuff now.

Reviewing the day is a bit premature, but here we are.

I did the thing where I continued work past a pomodoro again today.... I did a whole pomodoro worth of work. I think hard rule needs to be put into play, either I'm committing to another half-hour of work or I'm stopping working on that task until next planned session. None of this, "I'm so close," nonsense. The documentation on the pomodoro method even mentions this rule explicitly. I simply needed to learn why to heed it.

Okay, so, I might do two pomodoros to this today (we'll see). The main thing will be setting up a Trello board for all the stuffs. I'm going to dive deep into Trello, Stephan, and after a bit of usage I'll decide if I regress or evolve beyond it even further.

Let's hard-define "a bit" to "at least the end of July".

Sun Jun 10 02:25:09 UTC 2018

Yep, going to devote another pomodoro to this, got caught up in moving email actions to Trello.

Sun Jun 10 02:56:10 UTC 2018

Got lots of email actions moved to trello, but got a lot left (all of Someday/Maybe).

I've also created several project lists on a projects board. Still got more to do there, though. But I think this was good. If I do this every week I'll slowly have things organized into a good means of having an actual overview of my goals and my progress towards those goals.

Sun Jun 10 02:59:07 UTC 2018

Today I have tied my record for most pomodoros in a day. Well, since tracking it in Mixpanel. I have definitely done 20 in a day before. Today I did 11.

That's pretty awesome.

Last year, I received news that I'll be interviewing at this place called Mixpanel. I wonder what ever came of that?

Also last year: I thought I'd devote regular time to sewing (did it once and never again), decided to get a traditional futon (which is still my bed), and I finished a tutorial draft of using Wing IDE and Python.

Last month, I did some thinking about how my diary is becoming exactly what I had wanted it to be, but that it still needs improvement.

This is still true, and drawing is still something to consider. But I'm liking my progress as far as making a foundational webapp to make things in. So I'll continue focusing on that for now.

Sat Jun 09 02:06:47 UTC 2018

Yesterday, I said something I'd like to reiterate: naps are awesome. I was a bit out of it today, and my scheduled nap supercharged me to proper levels. I believe the tiredness was due to the exercise I did this morning.

I'm sorry yesterday me, but I won't be rereading the previous month's post this time (when you're a month old hopefully I'll remember).

Sat Jun 09 02:09:33 UTC 2018

I have a lot to say about today, but I'm out of time, and one of the things I have to say is that when I run out of time, I have to stop and move on. I'll review today tomorrow.

Today was not as good as yesterday, and that's okay, because progress is noisy. Also, today was still pretty good.

Sat Jun 09 02:12:24 UTC 2018

TypeScript caught the typo! "conut".

Time to update my template web app a bit. I want a type definition file for panel's StateController, which will be the main external thing I import in TypeScript files.

Thu Jun 07 14:55:19 UTC 2018

That was super painful. Had a bug in my javascript implementation (the part that I can't make typescript because it imports jade files and that breaks things right now if tried as typescript), and I thought it was my typescript screwing things up.

This setup should work for now, I think.

Thu Jun 07 15:14:39 UTC 2018

Did some thinking and I'd like to define state in the controller. I believe mapped types should allow me to do that.

I'll also want tslint.

But in any case, it's time to run to work.

Naps have just been super amazing lately. They aren't quite like sleep. There's this sense that I'm not falling asleep, and this restorative tingly sensation that starts in my brain and washes over my body, and then time moves super fast and I'm refreshed and "wake up" around the 30-minute mark.

My thoughts have this free-form-ness to them. Dream-like in a sense, but more... observable. And controllable.

Perhaps honing this ability would help towards developing lucid dreaming capabilities? I mean, I have had lucid dreams, but never on purpose, and only once where I had any sort of control over the content of the dream (and that control was solely staying in the dream and not panic waking).

But I digress. Main point: naps are awesome.

Just put The Pragmatic Programmer on hold at the library. I'm 15th in line, so it should be a while before it's available for me.

Last month: "Anyways, two Saturdays have passed without me doing personal project work, and thus some thinking is in order."

Last Saturday was strong, and this Saturday, too, will probably be strong.

We just didn't define the game we were playing well enough, past me. Playing "maximize pomodoros" was the panacea, though consistently reinforcing that with lagging metrics like accomplishment of my goals will be necessary, I think.

This is also the day wherein I described how words were not enough to capture my thoughts. I do draw my thoughts a bit, but I could work on doing it more.

Last month was just a cool post in general.

Future me: when you reread this post, also reread that post.

Fri Jun 08 03:04:28 UTC 2018

Yesterday vs today: I managed several work pomodoros (progress!), and I finished making a working TypeScript setup for my template webapp.

Well, there's more to be done to make it properly valuable (need to make a better type definition for panel), but it's functional in TypeScript, and that was the goal.

I have solidified my plan of starting the incorporation of Trello starting next weekly review.

Today is better thanks to yesterday, so thank you yesterday!

Time for Overwatch.
